Beautiful remote Lough Easky. Apparently the name ‘Easkey’ means ‘Plentiful in Fish’, and the lake is fittingly abundant in salmon and trout.

The last 1/3 goes across bog which is very wet this time of year so waterproof boots are essential. Missed a couple …

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to hike the Lough Easkey Loop?

The Lough Easkey Loop is approximately 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. Most hikers complete the route in about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.

What is the difficulty level of this trail?

The Lough Easkey Loop is generally considered a moderate hike. While the route is well-marked, the varied terrain, including boggy sections and rough lakeside paths, contributes to its moderate rating. It's not overly strenuous in terms of elevation gain, but the underfoot conditions require attention.

Where does the trail start and where can I park?

The trail is a loop around Lough Easkey. You can typically find parking near the lake, often at designated spots or along the minor roads that form part of the loop. There isn't a single, formal trailhead access point, as it's a circular route.

What is the terrain like on the Lough Easkey Loop?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter lakeshore tracks, laneways, and minor roads. A significant portion traverses bogland, which can be very wet and muddy, sometimes even shin-deep. Expect soft, boggy ground, rough and undulating lakeside paths, and sections crossing open ground near farmhouses.

What kind of scenery can I expect along the route?

You'll be treated to continuous views of the tranquil Lough Easkey and the dramatic backdrop of the Ox Mountain range. The landscape features scattered houses, forest plantations, and a protected blanket bog. You might also spot ruins from various historical periods, adding a unique historical dimension to the natural beauty.

What gear should I bring for the Lough Easkey Loop?

Given the boggy and often wet conditions, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended, if not essential. Gaiters can also be useful to keep your lower legs dry. Dress in layers suitable for changeable weather, and bring water and snacks. A hiking pole can help with stability on uneven ground.

What is the best time of year to hike the Lough Easkey Loop?

The trail can be hiked year-round, but the best time is typically during the drier months from late spring to early autumn (May to September). During these periods, the boggy sections may be less challenging, and you'll likely experience more pleasant weather for enjoying the scenery. Be prepared for potential wet conditions regardless of the season.

Is the Lough Easkey Loop dog-friendly?

Yes, the Lough Easkey Loop is generally dog-friendly. However, as parts of the trail cross open ground near farmhouses and through areas with wildlife, it's crucial to keep dogs on a leash to ensure their safety, respect local livestock, and protect the natural environment.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this trail or the Ox Mountains?

No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike the Lough Easkey Loop or access the general area of the Ox Mountains. The trail is freely accessible to the public.

Does the Lough Easkey Loop connect with other trails?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Lough Easkey Loop (100%), the Sligo Way (56%), and the EuroVelo 1 (34%). This means you might encounter markers for these longer routes along your hike.

What wildlife and plants can I see along the way?

The area is rich in biodiversity. You might spot diverse flora, including rare types of moss, especially in the blanket bog which is a Special Area of Conservation. Wildlife includes the Greenland white-fronted goose and the common lizard. The Easkey River, which flows nearby, is abundant with salmon and trout.
