The trail is easily accessible from Bolton Landing, New York. Parking is typically available at designated trailheads for the Cat and Thomas Mountains Preserve. It's advisable to arrive early, especially on weekends, as parking can fill up.
Yes, the preserve is noted as being pet-friendly. Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept on a leash at all times to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers.
The trail offers rewarding experiences throughout the year. Spring and fall provide pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage, while summer is popular for its clear views. Winter hiking is also possible, but be prepared for snow and ice, which can make sections more challenging. Always check local conditions before heading out.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Cat and Thomas Mountain Loop within the preserve. It's freely accessible to the public.
The terrain is quite varied, ranging from old logging roads and wooded paths to rugged, rocky sections. You'll encounter steep inclines, minor rock scrambles, and areas with difficult footing, especially on the ridge connecting the two mountains. Some routes, like the Two Brothers Trail, feature switchbacks, while others can be quite direct and steep.
Hikers are rewarded with exceptional views of Lake George and the Adirondacks. Key highlights include the Thomas Mountain Lookout and the Southern Overlook — Thomas Mountain, offering 180-degree views. From Cat Mountain, you'll find a stunning View of Lake George from Cat Mountain with a 270-degree panoramic vista. There's also a charming cabin on Thomas Mountain for resting, and you'll pass by natural features like the Edgecomb Tributary Lake.
The overall loop is considered moderate. The hike to Thomas Mountain alone is often described as shorter and easier, following an old jeep trail. However, continuing to Cat Mountain makes the trek longer and more challenging, with strenuous sections and difficult footing. Beginners with some fitness can tackle the full loop, but should be prepared for varied conditions and elevation changes.
The full Cat and Thomas Mountain Loop typically takes about 2 hours to complete, though this can vary based on your pace, stops for views, and trail conditions. The total distance is approximately 11.9 kilometers (7.4 miles) with an elevation gain of around 405 meters (1,329 feet).
Yes, the route utilizes sections of several trails within the preserve. You will hike along parts of the Cat Mountain Blue Trail, the Richard Hayes Phillips Trail, and the Blue Trail, among others.
Given the varied terrain and moderate difficulty, it's recommended to bring sturdy hiking boots, sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate layers of clothing. A map or GPS device is also helpful, as are trekking poles for steeper sections. Don't forget your camera for the panoramic views!
A unique feature is the charming, first-come, first-served cabin on Thomas Mountain, offering a great spot to rest and enjoy the 180-degree views. For those looking for a slightly less strenuous option, hiking only to Thomas Mountain and back is a shorter and easier alternative, while the full loop to Cat Mountain provides more challenging terrain and even more expansive vistas.
Comments
There were too many dificultad parts, very steep and rocky. Trail good sign but we got off the trail 4 times.
No fauna in sight ( nor humans)
