Second falls on Clark Creek

Highlight • Waterfall

This waterfall is located at the end of a spur trail off of the main trail. The falls, like the others in the area, usually keeps water year round, but it flows the heaviest after a recent rain. Some people hike to the first two sets of falls after leaving the trailhead and then just head back to the car. This is a short hike that most of the family can enjoy.

Lesser used trail

Highlight (Segment) • Waterfall

The section of the trail loop at Clark Creek Recreation Area is a lesser maintained, more primitive hiking trail. You have the opportunity to see a bunch of smaller, less visited waterfalls, but the trail is usually a little more overgrown and harder to follow than the earlier miles of trail.

Falls with a pool

Highlight • Waterfall

Perhaps the most impressive falls in the Clark Creek Natural Area is this waterfall with a large pool of water at its base. The falls and pool stick around all year, and there are a couple different paths that you can take to get to the falls. If you decide to hike further from the trailhead after passing these falls, you'll likely have the trail to yourself for a good while.

What is the best time of year to hike the Waterfall Loop?

While the trail is beautiful year-round, conditions can vary. After rain, sections can become very muddy, and creek crossings might be more challenging. How challenging is the Waterfall Loop trail?

The Waterfall Loop is generally considered a moderate hike, but sections can be quite challenging. Expect steep inclines, rugged terrain with rocks and roots, and uneven surfaces. Some areas may require careful footing due to steep drop-offs or muddy conditions, especially after rain. The average hiking speed can be as slow as one mile per hour due to the ruggedness.

What kind of terrain should I expect on the Waterfall Loop?

The terrain is rugged and varied. You'll encounter steep, moss-covered ravines, rocky paths, and potentially muddy sections. Hikers should be prepared for 'boulder-hopping' and navigating along creeks, which may mean getting your feet wet. While some improved sections have stairs, even these can be washed out.

What natural features and highlights can I see along the route?

The Waterfall Loop is renowned for its abundance of waterfalls, with over 50 cascades ranging from 10 to 30 feet. Along the way, you'll pass by specific highlights such as the Closest falls, the Second falls on Clark Creek, and a Falls with a pool. What wildlife might I encounter on the Waterfall Loop?

The Clark Creek Natural Area is home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Hikers might spot deer, various bird species, and small mammals. The area is also known for rare plant species and, occasionally, black bears, so it's wise to be aware of your surroundings.

How long does it typically take to complete the Waterfall Loop?

The Waterfall Loop is approximately 7.5 kilometers (4.7 miles) long. Given the rugged and challenging terrain, it typically takes around 2 hours and 9 minutes to complete, though individual times may vary significantly based on fitness and trail conditions.

What should I bring for a hike on the Waterfall Loop?

Given the rugged and potentially wet conditions, it's recommended to wear sturdy hiking boots, preferably waterproof, and bring extra socks. Water, snacks, and appropriate gear for varying weather conditions are also essential. Trekking poles can be very helpful for stability on steep or uneven sections.

Are there any observation decks or picnic areas along the trail?

Yes, the Clark Creek Natural Area offers observation decks for enjoying the scenic views and designated picnic areas where you can rest and refuel during your visit.

Is the Waterfall Loop suitable for families with young children?

Due to the trail's moderately challenging nature, including steep inclines, rugged terrain, and potential for mud and creek crossings, it might be challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to strenuous hiking. Families with older, experienced children who are comfortable with rugged conditions may enjoy it.

More training with the Scouts. Full backpacks and probably the most hills you can get near the gulf.coast.

Really nothing to do with what was originally stated on this route. It really takes 4 hours to complete this tour... in 2 hours I don't see how it's possible. At one point, the trail is so poorly maintained that it becomes difficult to follow the markings. We had to find our way back many times; despite the Komoot map in our pocket. In short, a nice long walk without any real difficulties (apart from the August heat), fortunately the forest is dense and covers well from the sun. Finally: 9.78km covered following the route proposed by Komoot. 426m D+ and 441m D-.
