The Balmoral Cairns loop is a moderate hike that typically takes between 2.5 to 4.5 hours to complete. This can vary based on your pace and how much time you spend exploring the historical cairns and enjoying the views.
The trail features a varied terrain, including woodland paths and tracks that can be muddy in places, as well as some unpaved and asphalt sections. You'll encounter moderate inclines and exposed hilltops, so sure-footedness is recommended.
This route is famous for its royal cairns. You'll pass several significant landmarks, including the striking Prince Albert's Cairn (Balmoral Pyramid), the Purchase Cairn (Balmoral Estate), and cairns dedicated to Princesses Beatrice, Helena, Alice, and Louise. Many of these offer superb views over Deeside and Balmoral Castle, with a notable View of Lochnagar.
The hike typically starts from the car park at Crathie. From there, you'll cross a suspension bridge over the River Dee and pass through Easter Balmoral to begin the loop.
The best time to hike is generally outside of August and September, as the full Balmoral Cairns walk may be closed or not advised when the Royal Family is in residence. Spring and autumn offer beautiful scenery, though conditions can be muddy. Always check local conditions before you go.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as it passes through parts of the Balmoral Estate and potentially near livestock, it's crucial to keep dogs on a lead and under close control at all times to protect wildlife and farm animals.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Balmoral Cairns loop itself. However, as it's located within the Cairngorms National Park, please adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which promotes responsible access to land and water.
While classified as moderate, some parts are easily accessible. Families with a good level of fitness and sure-footedness should find it enjoyable. The historical cairns add an interesting educational element for children, but be prepared for varied terrain and moderate inclines.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other paths. You'll find it intersects with parts of the Ballater to Gairnshiel Circular, the Scotland Trail, the Old Deeside Road, and the Riverside walk.
It's important to note that the full Balmoral Cairns walk is generally not advised or may be closed when the Royal Family is in residence, which typically occurs during August and September. Always check the Balmoral Estate website for current access information before planning your visit.
The loop offers diverse and beautiful scenery. You'll walk through lush pine forests, open moorlands, and gentle hills, with opportunities to see stunning views over Deeside and Balmoral Castle. The natural beauty of the woodlands and the distant views of Lochnagar are highlights.
Start and finish at Crathie car park (by Balmoral castle). £5 charge for all day parking (2021).
Revisited the Balmoral Cairns walk today with a colleague. An interesting walk with the large pyramid shaped Prince Albert Cairn being a particular highlight. We started around 10am and hardly met anyone else until the end. Stopped at The Highlanders Bakehouse for lunch. This is a 2 minute walk from the Crathie car park. Amazing baked goods and good coffee.
