Derradda Community Centre Trailhead

Highlight • Trail

There are three great loop walks that begin at the Derradda Community Centre about 3.5km (2.2 miles) west of Newport just off the Newport/Mulranny Road (N59). There is a signpost on the right for the community centre which is nestled in the foothills of the Nephin Beg range. Here you overlook beautiful Clew Bay and the local lakes. There are many other trails that start in the surrounding areas too. The Great Western Greenway website is a great resource for information: greenway.ie/burrishoole-loops

Highlight • Viewpoint

Lough Fadda (The Long Lake): Situated directly on the south side of the Great Western Greenway, this narrow lake forms a distinctive natural border on the stage between Newport and Mulranny. "Lough Fadda" (Irish for Loch Fada) stretches for almost a kilometer parallel to the cycle path and is a typical example of a peat lake, characterized by its deep, dark water and surrounding marsh vegetation. From this point, you have a spectacular contrasting view: on one side, the serene shores of the lake, and on the other, the rugged, open vistas across the inlets of Clew Bay.
