River Mole Stepping Stones

Highlight • Bridge

This ford is thought to have existed in some form or another since prehistoric times. Stepping stones were first recorded in 1841 and the ones you walk across now were dedicated by the UK Prime Minister after the previous set were destroyed during the Second World War to obstruct potential invaders.

The bridge here over the River Mole is known as the Rambler's Bridge. Erected in memory of the members of the Rambler's Association who died during the Second World War, this structure was built in 1992 to replace the original.

If the river is in flood or the stepping stones are busy this is an alternative route across the water.

National Trust (paid) parking - free for NT members. Not suitable for pushchairs. Steep steps down to the river which can be slippery in winter. You can cross the river over the stepping stones or a bridge further along the route. Steep hill back up to the top so slightly challenging but doable. Fully marked route, follow 'Stepping Stones Walk'.
