Hiking

Explore the rolling chalk hills and expansive grasslands of the Pewsey Downs on this moderate hike. Covering 2.8 miles (4.5 km) with an elevation gain of 249 feet (76 metres), you can expect to complete the route in about 1 hour and 13 minutes. As you traverse the trails, you'll encounter the iconic Alton Barnes White Horse carved into the hillside and enjoy panoramic views from Milk Hill, the highest point in Wiltshire.

This route is generally suitable for most fitness levels, offering a rewarding experience without extreme demands. However, be prepared for some steeper sections, particularly on Knap Hill, and ensure you have appropriate gear for exposure to weather conditions on the open downland. The area is criss-crossed with footpaths, so you'll find clear ways to navigate.

Beyond the stunning views, this trail is rich in history and natural beauty. You'll walk past Knap Hill, home to a significant Neolithic causewayed enclosure, one of the earliest identified prehistoric earthworks. The Pewsey Downs National Nature Reserve also protects diverse chalk grassland plants and various butterfly species, making it a notable spot for nature enthusiasts.

Knap Hill Car Park

Highlight • Parking

Knap Hill car park is a particularly useful spot from which to explore this section of the North Wessex Downs AONB and the Vale of Pewsey. Footpaths and bridleways head off in every direction from the car park and it's easy to create hiking routes as long or short as you like.

The Alton Barnes white horse is just to the west, although it's best seen from a little further afield.

Milk Hill 294m, Pewsey Down, Wiltshire (County High Top).
A longish but easy walk over undulating hills to get Milk Hill, the county top for Wiltshire. Thought I would do Tan Hill as well to bag a trig point. Turns out there was no summit marker on Milk Hill or a Trig Point on Tan Hill. Still, a lovely walk and well worth doing.

Route Statistics: Easy undulating trails with minimal ascent really. 9.2km done in 2hrs with 250m of height gain.

View of Alton Barnes White Horse

Highlight • Monument

One of Wiltshire's many white chalk horses, the Alton Barnes White Horse was cut in the early 1800s on the request of a local farmer. Well-maintained and much-visited, the horse lies just under a mile north of the village of Alton on the Pewsey Downs. Also on the hill is a long barrow and several examples of cross dykes, which are prehistoric earthworks.

The White Horse Trail passes right past it while the Ridgeway and the Great Stones Way pass nearby.

Super misty and eerie for the most part, but treated to some beautiful crepuscular rays as we headed for home! ☀️

The skylarks were LARKING!! Very lucky to not get any rain today, although the wind was a bit sharp on the south side.

As the highest place in Wiltshire, I felt this was a lovely, easy climb. The summit is located in farmers field, which had new crops growing when I visited so I didn't want to walk through to that point.
