The trail offers varied terrain. You'll encounter steps on descents and ascents, and gates. A significant part of the path follows West Beck, which can involve rocky scrambles, especially near Mallyan Spout Waterfall. Paths can be muddy and slippery after rain. The route also includes elevated paths through fields and wooded slopes, and a section along the old Whitby-to-Pickering railway line, which provides a more even, though gradually uphill, return.
While often graded as 'easy' overall, certain sections require caution. The rocky path alongside West Beck to Mallyan Spout Waterfall can be challenging, particularly after heavy rainfall, and a scramble is needed to reach the waterfall itself. The descent and ascent sections have steps and can be slippery when wet. Good footwear is essential, especially with children.
The loop is rich in scenery and history. Key highlights include the dramatic wooded valley of West Beck, the impressive Mallyan Spout Waterfall (the highest in the North York Moors), and the charming village of Goathland, famous as 'Aidensfield' from 'Heartbeat'. You'll also walk along part of George Stephenson's original Whitby-to-Pickering railway line. A short detour can lead you to the historic Birch Hall Inn, Beck Hole, reputedly the smallest pub in the North York Moors.
The trail typically starts from Goathland village, where parking is available. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking can fill up quickly.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, dogs should be kept on a lead, especially through fields with livestock and in sensitive natural areas. Be mindful of the rocky and potentially slippery sections, which might be challenging for some dogs.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time is often during drier periods from late spring to early autumn. After heavy rain, the paths, particularly along West Beck, can become very muddy and slippery, making the scramble to Mallyan Spout Waterfall more challenging. The waterfall is most spectacular after rainfall.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Mallyan Spout and Beck Hole loop or to enter the North York Moors National Park itself. However, standard parking charges may apply in Goathland village.
Given the varied and potentially challenging terrain, sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential. Waterproofs are recommended, especially in the UK climate. Bringing water and snacks is always a good idea, and trekking poles can be helpful for stability on rocky or slippery sections.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other established trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Goathland to Grosmont Rail Trail, The Inn Way, and briefly on the Centenary Walk and Combs Bridge trails.
Yes, Goathland village, the typical starting point, has cafes and pubs. Additionally, a short detour from Incline Cottage will lead you to the historic Birch Hall Inn, Beck Hole, a charming and tiny pub that's a local gem.
Many hikers find that tackling the rocky scramble along West Beck to Mallyan Spout Waterfall when the ground is drier makes for a more enjoyable experience. If you prefer to get the more strenuous, potentially slippery sections out of the way early, consider doing the loop in a direction that descends into the valley towards the waterfall first.
Nice easy Walk apart from rough scramble by the falls Smallest pub is closed Tues and Sat
Many lovely walks around Goathland, this started on one of my favourite walks, started from the car park and started on the Goathland rail trail until you come to the sign post for Mallyan spout waterfall. Can be hard on foot ones you get to the waterfall if had a rain and lots of water flowing. Once you get to the waterfall keeping going. You cross 2 bridges and come to a steep step climp back to the top of Goathland. Only a short walk but enjoyable.
