The loop typically starts from Scherwiller. You'll find parking options within the village, which serves as a convenient base for accessing the trail to the castles and Falkenstein Rock.
Scherwiller is accessible by public transport. Check local bus or train schedules to Scherwiller, and then you can usually walk to the trailhead from the village center.
This is a moderate hike, covering about 13.3 km with over 520 meters of elevation gain. While not overly strenuous, it requires sure-footedness due to varied forest paths and some rocky sections. It might be challenging for very young children or those unaccustomed to hiking, but active families could enjoy it.
The trail primarily follows forest paths. You'll encounter diverse landscapes, including granite formations, boulder fields, and steep rock formations, particularly around the Falkenstein Rock. Sure-footedness is required on some sections.
You'll discover several historical and natural highlights. Key attractions include the impressive Ortenbourg Castle, the panoramic Bernstein Castle, and the ruins of Ramstein Castle. Nature lovers will appreciate the unique Falkenstein Rock and the Rocher Bellevue Viewpoint.
Yes, the trail offers numerous viewpoints. From the Rocher Bellevue Viewpoint and the tower of Bernstein Castle, you can enjoy expansive panoramic views over the Villé valley, the Haut-Koenigsbourg castle, and the Central Alsace plain.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the moderate difficulty, varied terrain, and some rocky sections, ensure your dog is accustomed to longer hikes. Always keep your dog on a leash and be mindful of other hikers and wildlife.
Spring and autumn are ideal for this hike, offering pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer can also be enjoyable, especially with the shade of the forest paths, but be prepared for potentially warmer weather. Winter hiking is possible but may require appropriate gear for snow or ice.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this loop or access the natural areas within the Vosges mountains along this route. However, some castle ruins might have voluntary donation boxes or specific opening hours for interior access.
Yes, the route intersects with several other well-known paths. You'll find sections that overlap with the Traversée du massif des Vosges, Saverne-Châtenois, GR 5 Vosges, Le Donon - Ballon d'Alsace, and the Alsatian castles path.
Yes, there is a designated Picnic Area of the Old Redoubt, which can be a good spot for a break. Restroom facilities are generally limited on forest trails, so plan accordingly before starting your hike.

We visited the three castles on predominantly fine root paths and narrow forest paths. Since we ran 95% in the shade and were able to start at 6:30 a.m., we had no problems with the heat.
