Culture and raised bog in Drenthe – on the heaths of Fochteloërveen

For today's route you travel to the far north of Drenthe, where the Fochteloërveen awaits you. During this circular walk of more than 16.5 kilometers you will pass Highlights full of art and culture and you will stroll through the peat.

The day starts with a visit to orphanage Veenhuizen, where orphans were taken care of in the 19th century. So-called 'anti-socials' and poor people also found shelter here, where they worked hard.

If there's a trip on which you can let your mind wander, it's this one. You will pass the artwork by Hein Mader, called 'The Philosopher'. The artwork lets you reflect on the story of this area on the border between Friesland and Drenthe, which is one of the last high moor areas in our country.

Walking on wonderful paths you can enjoy this unique peat area for miles. If you want to recover from the steps through this marshy area, you can do so after about 13 kilometers at a point with a beautiful view over the Fochteloërveen.

Just before your final destination you will visit an old power station, which is now a national monument.

The start and end point of the route is the parking lot on the Oude Gracht. There is also a catering facility here for something to eat and drink. Along the way you take enough food and drinks with you in your backpack. Are you coming by public transport? Then get off at the Generaal v.d. Boschweg in Veenhuizen and pick up the route from here.
