This route offers a varied experience. The Jordan Pond Path is generally considered easy, especially its eastern half with flat gravel and boardwalks. However, the western half becomes more rugged with uneven footing and rocky sections. The ascent to the South Bubble is moderate to challenging, featuring steep, rocky sections and scrambling, with grades up to 50% in places. It requires good physical condition and sturdy hiking shoes.
The combined hike, including the Jordan Pond Path and the ascent to South Bubble, generally takes between 2 to 4 hours to complete. The Jordan Pond Path alone typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, while the South Bubble Trail can take 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
You'll enjoy diverse scenery. Key highlights include the extensive Boardwalk — Jordan Pond Path, the challenging Rocky Segment — Jordan Pond Path, and the iconic Bubbles Divide Trail. Don't miss the stunning View of The Bubbles from Jordan Pond and the panoramic View of Jordan Pond from the South Bubble. The famous Bubble Rock is also a must-see.
Yes, Acadia National Park is generally dog-friendly, and leashed dogs are permitted on most trails, including the Jordan Pond Path and South Bubble Trail. Always keep your dog on a leash no longer than 6 feet and pack out all waste.
The best time to hike is typically from late spring through fall. Summer offers lush greenery but can be crowded. Fall provides spectacular foliage. Spring and fall generally have fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures, though conditions can be wet, making rocky sections slippery.
Yes, Acadia National Park requires an entrance pass. You can purchase passes online, at visitor centers, or at fee stations. There are various pass options, including 7-day vehicle passes, individual passes, and annual passes. Check the official NPS website for current fees and purchase options: nps.gov.
Parking is available at the Jordan Pond House parking lot. However, it fills up very quickly, especially during peak season. Arriving early in the morning (before 7 AM) is highly recommended. Alternatively, you can utilize the free Island Explorer bus service, which provides transportation to the Jordan Pond area from various points in Acadia National Park and surrounding towns.
The eastern half of the Jordan Pond Path is generally easy and suitable for families. However, the western half of the Jordan Pond Path and the entire South Bubble Trail are more challenging due to rocky terrain, uneven footing, and steep scrambles. These sections may be difficult for small children or those with mobility issues. Consider your family's hiking experience before attempting the full loop or the South Bubble ascent.
Bubble Rock is a famous glacial erratic located near the summit of South Bubble. It's a large boulder precariously balanced on the edge of the mountain, left behind by glaciers thousands of years ago. It's a popular spot for photos and offers incredible views of Jordan Pond below.
Yes, the historic Jordan Pond House is located right at the trailhead. It's famous for its popovers and tea, offering a delightful spot to refuel before or after your hike. It's a popular destination, so expect it to be busy during peak times.
Given the varied terrain, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential. Bring plenty of water, especially if you plan to ascend South Bubble. Snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing are also advisable, as weather conditions can change. A camera is a must for the stunning views!
Have hiking boots on, at least if you're planning to hike up to the bubbles
If you want park in car park, arrive early. Also, the ascent of the Bubbles Trail is quite challenging but also rewarding. We would not want to descend it, so please follow the recommended route. We found the path we descended on much easier. When ascended up the Bubbles Trail, we needed both hands free to grip onto rocks to pull ourselves up. Make sure you have a pocket or bag to stow away any phone or camera you may be holding whilst climbing.
One of the easier hikes in Acadia park. Mostly level paths, light gravel on the east side of Jordan Pond. West side has areas where you scramble over large rocks and boulders, then a long boardwalk about the more sensitive areas.
Beautiful circular route around the lake. On the west side there is almost a continuous plank walkway
Another highlight in Acadia National Park 🤩 very varied path
