Hiking

The Dom may be the highest point in Utrecht, but the Amerongse Berg, at 69.2 meters, is the highest natural peak in the province. And you're going to climb it today! That promises to be another 10 kilometers of natural wonders.

The top is already quite at the beginning of the route, so those calves are immediately put to work. The mountain is hidden in the Amerong forest, which is one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands. Fortunately, there are several viewpoints here and there on and around the top. Bring your binoculars and stare!

When you've had enough, continue the tour through the forest and over the heathland of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, where more beautiful views await you. With a bit of luck the weather is nice and you can see very far. Do you spot the Lange Jan in Amersfoort or maybe even the windmills at the Eemmeer, which is no less than 63 kilometers away?

In this beautiful forest full of trees, there is also loneliness; just before the end point, an oak stands all alone on the field. However, this loneliness does not look really sad with the power that the impressive tree radiates. Around the oak you can keep the tree company on a bench. Enjoy the peace and quiet for a while before you walk back to Amerongen.

In Amerongen you can enjoy a snack and a drink after the beautiful walk. If you still have time and energy left, you can visit the imposing Amerongen Castle. For on the road today you take water and snacks with you in your backpack.

The circular walk starts and ends close to Amerongen Castle. Here you can park the car. For those coming by public transport: at Driebergen-Zeist station you can take bus line 50 to 'Amerongse Berg'.

The Amerongse Berg was created when moraines formed during the ice age, about 150,000 years ago. From the mountain there are a number of nice viewpoints. So bring binoculars! And then simply enjoy the Amerong forest, one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands.

Beautiful viewpoint. When the weather is clear in the morning you can see the windmills on the Eemmeer at 63 km in the distance above the trees. With a little less effort the Lange Jan in Amersfoort.

Lone oak

Highlight • Natural Monument

In the center of the star forest stands the lone oak, a clearly solitary tree. This forest of stars, which was created around 1790, originally has the shape of a wagon wheel with eight spokes. This oak was probably planted in 1792 during the construction of the star forest. The construction, on the highest point of the Amerongse berg, was commissioned by the owners of Amerongen Castle, who owned a large area here.

This walk was planned a while ago. Together with my two sisters, we walk a few times a year to catch up and have lunch together.

This walk was chosen by my youngest sister who lives in Utrecht. Perfect walk in the nice weather, a lot in the shade under the trees. We started an hour earlier and it was …
