Despite its relatively short length, the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail is considered difficult. It features a steep and relentless incline with significant elevation gain, rocky steps, and switchbacks. Handrails are installed in some of the steepest sections near the top to assist climbers. It's a serious workout, often compared to a 'stairway from hell into heaven,' and many hikers do not reach the summit.
The trail's terrain is varied and challenging. You'll encounter sections of concrete, stone, and even broken concrete at the beginning, transitioning to steps carved directly from the mountain rock further up. The path is well-marked but uneven, requiring precise footing due to the continuous climb and varied surfaces.
This is an out-and-back trail. You'll ascend to the summit and then return the same way you came up.
The best time to hike is during the cooler months, from late fall through early spring (October to April). During these months, the temperatures are more moderate. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal to avoid the midday heat, even in cooler seasons. The trail is also open for night hiking until 11:00 PM outside of summer months, offering incredible city views under the moonlight.
No, dogs are not permitted on the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail. This trail is for foot traffic only.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail, as it is part of the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, which is free to access.
Parking is available at the trailhead. There are restrooms, drinking fountains, and shaded seating areas near the parking lots. Arriving early, especially on weekends, is recommended to secure a spot as it's a very popular trail.
From the summit of Piestewa Peak, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views of the Phoenix metropolitan area. On a clear day, you can identify Camelback Mountain, the downtown Phoenix skyline, and even the distant White Tank and Estrella Mountains. The views are spectacular, especially during sunrise and sunset.
While there are drinking fountains near the parking lots at the trailhead, water is not available on the trail itself. It is crucial to carry plenty of water, especially given the trail's challenging nature and the desert climate, as dehydration is a common problem for unprepared hikers.
Yes, the route for the Piestewa Peak Summit Trail (also known as Summit Trail 300) also passes through sections of the Freedom Trail 302 and the Alternate Summit Trail 300A.
The trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the rugged beauty of the Sonoran Desert. You might spot diverse flora, including giant saguaros and various cactus species, and occasionally glimpse wildlife such as chipmunks, gila monsters, horned lizards, coyotes, and various birds.
