This hike is generally considered to be of easy to moderate difficulty. While there's a continuous ascent to the top of Mount Lee, it's not excessively steep for most of the widely used paths. It's often described as more of an 'uphill walk' than a strenuous climb, suitable for those with moderate fitness levels.
The terrain varies. You'll find paved sections, especially on main access roads like Mount Lee Drive and through residential areas. However, other parts are unpaved dirt paths, particularly as you get closer to Mount Lee and traverse ridges. Some sections may involve steps or gradual inclines, transitioning from urban landscapes to more natural settings.
This trail offers incredible panoramic views. You'll get unique angles of the Hollywood Sign, including being directly behind it at the summit of Mount Lee. From there, you can see the sprawling Los Angeles cityscape, the Downtown LA skyline, and the expansive San Fernando Valley. You'll also catch glimpses of the beautiful Hollywood Reservoir and pass by landmarks like the Mulholland Dam.
Key highlights include the Hollywood Reservoir, the Mulholland Dam, and various viewpoints offering stunning perspectives of the Hollywood Sign, such as the View of the Hollywood Sign from Tyrolean Tank and the Hollywood Sign Viewpoint. The ultimate destination is the Back of the Hollywood Sign on Mount Lee, offering unparalleled views.
Popular starting points often include areas near Lake Hollywood Park. Parking availability can vary, so arriving early, especially on weekends, is recommended to secure a spot. Always check local signage for parking restrictions.
Yes, this trail is generally dog-friendly. Dogs are typically allowed on leash. Please remember to bring water for your pet and clean up after them to keep the trails enjoyable for everyone.
The best times to hike are typically during the cooler months, from late fall to spring (November to May), when temperatures are more moderate. Summer can be very hot, so if hiking then, it's best to go early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat. Weekdays are generally less crowded than weekends.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the trails in Griffith Park, including this route to the back of the Hollywood Sign. The park is free and open to the public.
There is a Water Refill Station along the route. However, it's always wise to carry sufficient water for your entire hike, especially on warmer days. Restroom facilities are limited and generally found near popular parking areas or at the start of some trailheads, not typically along the entire route.
Yes, the route utilizes several established paths. You'll traverse sections of Lake Hollywood Drive, Innsdale Trail, Aileen Getty Ridge Trail, Burbank Peak Trail, Montlake Drive, Last House Trail, Mulholland Trail, and Mt Chapel Trail, among others, as you make your way to the back of the Hollywood Sign.
Given its moderate difficulty and mostly well-maintained paths, this hike can be suitable for families with children who are accustomed to walking longer distances. The continuous uphill sections might be challenging for very young children, but the rewarding views make it a great adventure for active families.
To avoid crowds, consider hiking on a weekday morning. While the main path to the back of the sign is popular, exploring some of the intersecting trails like the Wisdom Tree on Burbank Peak can offer slightly less crowded alternatives and different viewpoints of the city and the sign.
First day in LA - let's start with a hike to the landmark par excellence. The route was rated easy by Komoot - the girls complained a lot on the climb to Burbank Peak - but the view was definitely worth it. On the way back, however, we decided to take a different route through Lake Hollywood Park - so today's tour became a nice circular route. I liked it - especially at 18 degrees hiking is more fun than at five degrees and permanent rain. And the LA skyline was beautiful to look at
We actually wanted to continue the hike from the highest point toward Wisdom Tree, but had to turn back after about 400 meters because the terrain was too difficult for us. Up until then—back of Hollywood—everything was normal. So, the hike was a bit longer but still very beautiful.
