Storey Arms – Start of the Pen y Fan Trail

Highlight • Rest Area

People don't realise how special this location is. This is the start of the famed Fan Dance. A load-bearing 24km, non-navigational, endurance test. The SAS pioneered it as part of their selection process, and it has become a personal test for most fitness junkies these days. The route takes you from here to Pen Y Fan, then descends down the steep terrain of 'Jacob's Ladder' to the Roman Road, which takes you down past the reservoir into a car park at Torpantau Forestry. Then you simply about turn, and come back the other way. Oh, yes, you're carrying 35kg, and you have to do it in less than four hours.

Rhyd-y-Defaid Stepping Stones

Highlight • Bridge

It descends to cross the Blaen Taf Fawr, where you have to ford the stream using stepping stones. This is one of the earliest forms of crossing bodies of water devised by humans. No specific hazards, but it’s still a ford and you’ll need to know what you’re doing, especially after heavy rainfall.

Corn Du summit

Highlight • Summit

Corn Du is rarely climbed alone, but as a peak added to an expedition to Pen y Fan. The climb up is a great one though and the views from the top are absolutely spectacular.

On clear days, you can see all the way to the Severn Bridge and beyond, as well as much of the Brecon Beacons National Park. Be careful in bad weather conditions: visibility can shrink to zero on one of the regular foggy days and strong winds will try and blow your sandwiches away!

Pen y Fan

Highlight • Summit

Chief of the Brecon Beacons and the highest summit in south Wales, Pen y Fan is a hugely popular peak with routes to the top to suit everyone from first time day-trippers to potential SAS commandos. Red sandstone creates its unmistakable layered profile and gives hue to the Bronze Age cairn that tops the summit.

Video of my walk here :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XklZwWuvQdI

I met a local hiker on the top of Pen y Fan who told me it wasn’t the best or the most picturesque walk in the area, but it was the highest and that’s why it also the busiest. Keep this in mind, and you won’t be disappointed. https://youtu.be/v27Ote0pYBc

Parking wasn’t too much of a problem, but fairly busy (and steep!) on the way up to Pen y Fan. Really wonderful views though. Suggest bringing hat and gloves as it’s cold at the summit around this time of year.

Excellent hike with fantastic views once you reach the top. I hiked there with my brother Keith on the longest day of the year, June 21st 2023. Once your at the top, the views are incredible and it also has some shear drops from the edges. I wouldn't recommend taking children as it is a very hard climb even with adults, and on this day I witnessed several struggling with the climb. I'm 64 and quite fit and found it more hard than easy. On the back we stopped at the Aberglais Inn which had excellent food and drink with lovely hosts. I was blown away with there Ale & Steak Pie-delicious.

Best views I’ve had from Pen Y Fan and we just missed the fog, super windy though! Loved this walk I always see it on Komoot but never got round to doing this one 🙃 lots of free parking at the Storey Arms and nearby lay-bys… Emily was actually holding her hat on it was that windy not posing 😂

Starting at the Storey Arms car park, the trail is steep but clearly visible through grassy hills. More on this soon in the Gipfelglück blog.

Stunning circular route to Corn Du & Pen y Fan. I parked in the Pont ar Daf car park just so I was closer to my car when finshing the route. There's a lay by just a bit further down that's free to park in otherwise. I much prefer doing a circular route, and this one is perfect for catching the sunset. I hadn't been on a hike in such a long time and this was exactly what I needed, to connect with nature and enjoy a few hours of escapism! 😊🙌🏻
