Marloes Peninsula – wheelchair walks in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

The Marloes Peninsula is known for its rugged coast, birdlife-rich islands and its vibrant heathland and wetland. This out and back explores mostly level grassy paths and takes you to three separate viewpoints along the coast, where you can enjoy gazing down to secluded, sandy beaches and out to the peninsula’s famous islands.

The wheelchair accessible Puffin Shuttle visits both Martin’s Haven and the top of the lane leading to Marloes Sands. There are also car parks at both sites.

Leave the Marloes Sands car park and pick up the broad track past the youth hostel, where the Runwayskiln cafe is a tempting option. The first detour brings you to a point on the coast path above Marloes Sands, with excellent views towards Gateholm Island and beyond to Skokholm Island.

Back on the main track, the route takes you alongside Marloes Mere, a marshy wetland that’s home to wildfowl, hen harries and short-eared owls. The second detour is next and features a 1:10 gradient for a short spell. Again, the view from the coast path is excellent.

The third detour is a little shorter and reveals Gateholm Island from its other side. Soon you pass an Iron Age fort, before joining the main coast path. Follow this all the way to Martin’s Haven car park. Martin’s Haven is the embarkation point for boats to Skomer, an island that’s home to approximately half the world’s Manx shearwaters and a large Atlantic puffin colony. However, the path down to the pebble beach is very steep.

To get back to your car, simply follow the main outward route. If you are using the Puffin Shuttle, you can catch it from Martin’s Haven car park.
