Carrilet I greenway is a route that follows the old route of the train that connected Olot and Girona. It is an ideal route to do by bike or on foot, as it has little gradient and crosses very varied and beautiful landscapes. The route has a length of 56 kilometers and passes through twelve towns in three counties: Garrotxa, Gironès and Selva.

The route starts in Olot, in the heart of the Garrotxa volcanic area, where you can admire the natural and cultural heritage of this region. From Olot, the route goes to Les Preses, Sant Esteve d'en Bas and Sant Feliu de Pallerols, where you can see the Hostoles castle. Afterwards, the route climbs up to the En Bas pass, the highest point on the itinerary, at 589 meters above sea level. From there, the route gently descends to Girona, following the valleys of the rivers Fluvià, Brugent and Ter.

Along the way, you can visit charming towns such as Les Planes d'Hostoles, Amer, La Cellera de Ter, Anglès and Bonmatí. Finally, the route reaches Girona, where you can enjoy the history and culture of these cities. In Girona, the route connects with the second section of Carrilet, which goes to Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

Green Walls on the Olot-Girona Greenway

Highlight • Trail

This section of the Via Verde is very pleasant. Lots of shade, very slight slope when not absent and (relatively) far from cars and noise. The ground is good, sometimes there are paths with rocks on the surface but nothing uncomfortable.

Amer Station

Highlight • Structure

Amer is located halfway between Olot and Girona and is a town with more than a thousand years of history, where you can still breathe its medieval past. Amer has been the birthplace of several presidents of the Generalitat; four were abbots of the monastery between the 15th and 17th centuries, and two were born in Amer. The Amer Valley has great forest wealth, and the forests of chestnut, hazel, oak and pine stand out. Bordering the eastern part of the town is the Brugent River, formerly called the Amera River, which merges with the Ter River. The Carrilet route is one of the access entrances to the town. Its old railway station is today a mandatory stop and in the past it was one of the most important, since the train workshops and warehouses were also located here.

Comfortable from Olot to Gironde via the Via Verdes: many parts of the route are in the shade of large trees; it's also mostly downhill..😃

The Vía Verde offers us a varied cycling stage through the volcanic region of the Garrotxa until we reach Girona, whose medieval Jewish quarter is just one of the many sights in the picturesque old town.

Carrilet I, from Girona to Olot. A very scenic route, it climbs the former railway line to Olot at a constant 2% gradient. There are occasional short sections along the route that climb at 13-14%. Overall, it's a good ride, although for longer stretches, the gravel from the trackbed was used to reinforce the track, making it quite bumpy. This …

What a great fun and quite relaxed gravel bike tour from Olot to Girona. Most of the route is on the old railway line that ran from Olot to Girona at the beginning of the last century until 1969. Has now been converted into a beautiful gravel tour. First with the bike bus to Olot, so that it is mainly …
