Hiking

Embark on an easy 2.8-mile (4.6 km) hike around Gurnard's Head and Porthmeor Cove, a loop that takes about 1 hour and 24 minutes to complete with 539 feet (164 metres) of elevation gain. You will follow rugged coastal paths and grassy sections of the South West Coast Path, passing towering cliffs and rocky shores. The route offers dramatic views of the wild Atlantic coastline, especially from the windswept Gurnard's Head, which resembles a gurnard fish.

This trail is generally considered easy to moderate, making it accessible for most fitness levels. While some sections involve ascents and descents, the paths are mostly accessible. Be aware that conditions can get muddy after rain. You will traverse unpaved footpaths, with only brief sections on roads. The Gurnard's Head Hotel is conveniently located nearby, offering a welcoming stop for refreshments after your walk.

Discover a rich historical tapestry as you hike, passing remnants of ancient Iron Age settlements and cliff castles, including the site of Trereen Dinas on Gurnard's Head. You will also see numerous old tin and copper mine workings. Porthmeor Cove is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to its unique geology, where you can observe evidence of molten granite intrusion and basaltic pillow lavas. The cove is often tranquil and less crowded, providing a peaceful escape.

Gurnard's Head

Highlight • Historical Site

Gurnard’s Head is a rocky and windswept headland. The name reflects the fact that the peninsula resembles the head of the gurnard fish. You can see the remains of an ancient settlement and cliff castle here.

Porthmeor Cove

Highlight • Viewpoint

A place of peace and tranquility, Porthmeor Cove is particularly lovely at low tide when the sandy beach is exposed. But as a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), even at high tide, its boulders and rock pools are fascinating to explore.

You will rarely meet many other people here as it is off the beaten track and only accessible by footpath.
