You have two main options for accessing the trail. You can park at Upper Canyon Road, which offers free parking. Alternatively, you can start from McHugh Creek, but this trailhead requires a day-use parking pass.
While generally considered moderate for hiking, this trail leans towards difficult for mountain biking. It features a significant and steady alpine climb with sections described as "gnarly" and "fed up incline," including "lots of big rocks." Many riders find themselves walking portions of the ascent. The downhill can also be very bumpy and challenging.
The trail begins as an old road bed, transitioning to singletrack closer to the lake. It's mostly double-track, with a singletrack option available for the initial section. The surface varies, consisting of packed dirt, gravel, and at times, "melon-sized rocks." Be prepared for rugged and rocky sections, especially on the climb, and potential mud on rainy spring and summer days.
The trail offers breathtaking views throughout. You'll ride below Flattop Mountain and across from McHugh Peak. The ultimate reward is the beautiful alpine Rabbit Lake, nestled between North Yuyanq' Ch'ex and South Yuyanq' Ch'ex peaks. From a saddle about two-thirds of the way up, you can enjoy views of the city, and from the peak, several mountain lakes and the Anchorage skyline are visible.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Rabbit Lake Trail. However, it also passes through sections of the McHugh Lake Trail and the Ptarmigan Pass Trail.
The Rabbit Lake Trail is located within Chugach State Park. Dogs are generally permitted on trails within the park, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. Please ensure you pack out all waste.
The trail is popular in the summer, but be aware that rainy spring and summer days can make it muddy. For the best experience, aim for drier periods during the summer months. Always check current trail conditions before heading out.
While there isn't a specific permit required for the Rabbit Lake Trail itself, if you choose to access it from the McHugh Creek trailhead, you will need a day-use parking pass for Chugach State Park. Parking at Upper Canyon Road is free.
As with all Alaskan trails, it's crucial to be well-prepared. We recommend bringing layers of clothing, plenty of water, snacks, bear spray, and a charged cell phone. Given the trail's difficulty and rocky sections, a well-maintained mountain bike suitable for rugged terrain is essential.
The Rabbit Lake Trail is typically ridden as an out-and-back route. For mountain bikers, the average riding time is around 2 hours and 14 minutes, though this can vary significantly based on skill level and how much time is spent enjoying the views at the lake.
The Rabbit Lake Trail is primarily an out-and-back route. There isn't a designated loop option for mountain biking that returns to the same trailhead via a different path.
