This route was planned by komoot.
This walk is generally rated as moderate. While many sections are relatively flat, especially along the edges, there are one or two steep ascents, including a notable bank early on. The path can be uneven, stony, and potentially muddy after rain. It's an enjoyable stroll for most, but allow extra time if hiking with children.
The trail features a varied terrain, including woodland tracks, narrow and stony paths, and sections across fields. You'll traverse gritstone edges, which can be uneven, and may encounter remnants of old millstones. While mostly flat once on the edges, be prepared for some steep sections and potentially muddy conditions, especially after wet weather.
This walk is rich in features! You'll experience three prominent gritstone edges: Froggatt Edge, Curbar Edge, and White Edge. Along Froggatt Edge, you can discover the remnants of the Froggatt Edge Stone Circle. The route also offers spectacular panoramic views across Big Moor, the Derwent Valley, and the White Peak, with a trig point on White Edge providing excellent vantage points.
A major highlight of this walk is the opportunity to spot red deer, particularly on Big Moor and near the trig point on White Edge. In spring and summer, there's also a chance to see adders in the long grass, so keep a respectful distance.
Yes, the walk is dog-friendly. However, as it passes through moorland and areas with livestock and wildlife, dogs should be kept on a lead, especially during lambing season and near deer. Always follow the Countryside Code.
The walk can be enjoyed year-round. Spring and summer offer vibrant heather and the best chances for wildlife spotting, including adders. Autumn brings beautiful colours to the moorland. Winter can be stunning with snow, but conditions can be challenging, requiring appropriate gear and caution due to potential ice and mud.
While the exact starting point can vary, popular parking options include the Curbar Gap car park. From here, you can easily access Curbar Edge and begin the circular route. Arriving early, especially on weekends, is advisable as parking can fill up quickly.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access this walk within the Peak District National Park. The park is open for public enjoyment, though standard parking fees may apply at designated car parks.
Yes, there are a couple of convenient options. Approximately halfway through the walk, you'll find The Grouse Inn, which is a great spot for a pint and pub grub. Additionally, on weekends, Jolly's Coffee and Cake van is often located at the Curbar Gap car park, perfect for pre- or post-walk treats.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Longshaw Estate, which includes parts of the 'Longshaw Estate' trail itself, as well as smaller portions of the 'Views and Woodlands Walk at Longshaw, Longshaw Estate' and the 'Longshaw Ranger Run, Longshaw Estate'.
The Frogatt, Curbar and White Edge Red Deer Circular Walk typically takes between 2.5 to 3.5 hours for adults to complete. If you're hiking with younger children or plan to take frequent breaks to enjoy the views and explore, it could extend to 5 hours or even a full day.
Lovely walk with great views, particularly along Froggat and Curbar Edges. We parked in the National Trust car park as we are members (so get in for free). The public footpath passes along the edge and the the only problem is getting accross a stream before getting to the road. There are some parking spaces along the road but these are limited.
Time restricted today - so I parked at the Gap- normally I would start from the Bridge Inn and walk up.
Fab day with Yugen Explore and Komoot. Lovely to meet lots of great people 💚♥️
A snowy hike loop around Curbar and Froggart, following a route already on Komoot! Only once did we end up in waist deep snow whilst following the loop! Amazing views over Curbar edge, with deep puddles to try and jump over (or fall in if you're Ben 🤦🏼♀️). Even doggo enjoyed jumping in and out of the snow! 10/10 great fun had by all!!
