This route was planned by komoot.
I had a personal target. I didn't hit it. It doesn't matter.
That handsome lad is Ezra, my brilliant nephew, just turned 18, visiting from New York for the first time since the pandemic. He's been in the hills before but this was our first hike with just the two of us, and Kinder delivered a wonderful mix of hot sun, heavy rain and brisk wind. A perfect, thrilling, day that we will both cherish.
Waterfalls don't often go upwards, but Storm Isha gave Kinder Downfall no choice today as I repeated Saturday's walk to test the legs. Spectacular vast plumes of water were thrown back up over the edge as the phenomenally strong wind pushed hard against the western flank of the Kinder plateau. Braced against rocks for security, the water was hurled against my face as if I were stood watching an ocean wave meet a breakwater with force. Epic stuff.
My favourite loop in great wintry conditions, and at times quite savage blustery wind coming up from the SW reaches.
I've done this circuit in every weather but this was my coldest round yet with wind chill of -10°C borne by a powerful easterly. The ground was frozen solid: thick crusts of ice over the usually sodden peat made the normally soft ground deeply rutted and arduous. The cumulative effort required by the slippery terrain, plus an injection of pace to generate heat, meant that as I passed Kinder Low I felt a muscle strain in my groin that I had to then nurse another 5 miles home. By the time I was nearing the car I was limping, in severe pain and starting to get cold in a way that I didn't like. Oops. *closer to 3000ft elevation than the usual wild @komoot underestimation - when are they going to revise the algorithm...? ⛰️ Kinder Low (633 m) • 🦶⬆️ 2025 = 3,148 m | 🌐 summitbag
Map and compass required for crossing the top of Kinder Scout. Short but featureless.
Please ignore the speed/time data - Komoot doesn’t import that data correctly from the Suunto GPX file. Actual time was 7 hours.
A walk from Edale up Ringing Roger to bag the 3 trig points on the Kinder Scout plateau - Edale Moor, The Edge and Kinder Low. We also visited Kinder Downfall before heading down Jacobs Ladder back into Edale via fhe Pennine Way. We had beautiful weather (it was almost too hot when we finished)! A great route but very boggy in places - my husband slipped into a bog that was thigh deep on the path from Edale Moor trig to the northern edge path!
