Bar Road Climb from Baslow

Highlight • Viewpoint

If you're climbing up from Baslow, you can take the first right to follow the footpath to Jack Flat woodland (footpath becomes steeper, muddier and rockier) or carry straight on to the next junction where a left at the top will take you to Curbar Edge and Froggatt or take a right to carry on Bar Road, going past the Wellington Monument.

Baslow Edge

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

If you are walking along Baslow Edge, why not add the other 3 to your tour, Froggatt, Curbar, and the lesser known White Edge, great views all along here. Can get busy during the summer months.

View from Curbar Edge

Highlight • Viewpoint

Curbar Edge is a gritstone escarpment that affords spectacular views. With rocks to scramble upon, moorland trails, picnic spots, scenic woodlands, plus more, there’s plenty to explore. It's one of the only places in the Peak District where you can observe adders, too (take care with dogs).

The light here can be wonderfully cinematic, especially at sunrise and sunset. All in all, a fantastic place to explore and admire the varied landscapes of the Peak District.

Froggatt Edge

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Great spot to look over the valley below and take in the view. Even when the valley is full of mist it still makes a good picture.

Grindleford Woodland Path

Highlight • Trail

The forest behind Grindleford is a great spot for a relaxing walk. While it can be quite challenging after wet weather, the trails here are wonderful.

The small yet picturesque village of Froggatt oozes Peak District charm. Occupying an enviable spot in the Derwent Valley and nestled beneath the iconic gritstone escarpment of Froggatt Edge, it is popular with hikers, cyclists and climbers alike.

Landmarks in the village include its 17th-century stone arched bridge, as well as the cosy Chequers Inn, which serves great food.

Calver Weir

Highlight • Structure

Calver Weir was built in the 19th century to provide water to power Calver Mill, a little further down the River Derwent. These days, the Grade II-listed structure is a prominent feature on the river and is home to much wildlife, especially birdlife. In summer, many people swim and paddle in the weir. The section of trail from the weir to Calver is very picturesque and a pleasure to stroll along.

Riverside Trail Along the River Derwent

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This delightful section joins Calver and Baslow via an idyllic trail along the mirror-like River Derwent. In spring, lambs skip in the meadows and wildflowers such as bluebells, daisies and pyramidal orchids burst into life. Wild garlic is also abundant here. At any time of year, it’s a pleasure, though, and makes a good link between the villages.

On the edge of the Chatsworth Estate and overlooked by the dramatic gritstone escarpments of Curbar Edge and Baslow Edge, the village of Baslow is a superb base for outdoor activities in the Peak District. Surrounded by some of the Dark Peak's most moving scenery and with objectives like Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and the Monsal Trail nearby, there's so much to do and see.

Thanks to this, you are served very well by Baslow's amenities. There are plenty of places to stay and some excellent pubs, cafes and restaurants in the village.

Trail Reviews

Donna
January 25, 2025, Chatsworth to Froggatt and back

First 10+ mile walk post op knee surgery. Definitely put it to the test, but was so nice to get out properly.

I took the wrong path at one of the stepping-stone stream crossings past Froggatt Edge. Either take the correct path...or continue on whatever trail I took (along the side of a wall) because it does lead to some proper paths at the bottom. Realising I had gone wrong, I tried to cut across the stream and meet the actual path. Crossing the stream was ok but beyond it was very boggy so best to avoid that no man's land. 😬

This is one of my favourite hikes in the Peak District. It was super windy up there on this day, but that made it more wild and fun!
