Hiking

Embark on an easy hike from The Square to Boscombe Pier and back, looping through Bournemouth's Lower Gardens. This scenic route covers 3.7 miles (5.9 km) with a minimal elevation gain of 76 feet (23 metres), making it suitable for most. You can expect to complete the loop in about 1 hour and 31 minutes, enjoying diverse scenery from coastal views along the promenade to the tranquil, lush greenery of the gardens.

This accessible trail begins at the bustling Bournemouth Square, a vibrant town center hub. The path primarily follows paved promenades, especially between Bournemouth Pier and Boscombe Pier, making it an excellent choice if you are pushing a pram or using a wheelchair. The well-maintained paths within the Lower Gardens also contribute to the trail's overall ease, ensuring a comfortable experience for various fitness levels.

Along the way, you will discover several notable features that enhance your hike. Boscombe Pier offers panoramic sea views and a unique musical trail with aluminum instruments, plus a quirky mini-golf course where balls are made of biodegradable fish food. The Grade II listed Lower Gardens are a highlight, featuring beautiful floral displays, a bandstand, an aviary, and even host a Christmas Tree Wonderland in winter. These gardens are also home to the Bourne Stream, which gave Bournemouth its name.

Bournemouth Lower Gardens

Highlight • Parking

Despite being a large, sprawling town, Bournemouth has plenty of wonderful outdoor spaces and the Lower Gardens is one such spot. The town's gardens link together and are in three sections: Lower, Central and Upper. The Lower Gardens stretch from shopping district in the town centre all the way to the seafront.

Packed with activities and particularly lovely in summer, these gardens have a raucous aviary, sub-tropical plants, mini-golf and food kiosks.

Boscombe Pier

Highlight • Beach

This Victorian pier stretches out into the bay to the east of Bournemouth pier. Free to walk along, it provides a wonderful vantage point from which to admire the land, look across to the Old Harry Rocks at Studland to the west and the Isle of Wight to the east.

The pier itself has food outlets, mini golf and other attractions. The mini golf is rather clever in that it uses a biodegradable shell with fish food inside. When the balls inevitably get thwacked over the edge of the pier, they become fish food!
