The hike from Campodonico to Monte Giuoco generally takes approximately 5 to 5.5 hours to complete, not including any stops you might make. This is for the full 11 km (6.8 mi) route with its 635 meters (2,083 ft) of elevation gain.
The trail features varied terrain. You'll start on steep, uneven, and stony dirt roads, then ascend along ridges to reach summit meadows. The descent typically involves meadows, wooded paths, and further dirt roads. Expect mixed forests and beech woods, and be prepared for diverse surfaces including scree and stones.
This trail is classified as moderate to challenging, often rated 'E' or 'E+' (excursionist for experienced hikers). It requires good physical fitness and sure footing due to steep sections, varied terrain, and significant elevation gain. It's best suited for hikers with some experience in mountain walking.
From the summit of Monte Giuoco del Pallone (1,228 m), you'll enjoy expansive 360-degree panoramic views of the Umbrian-Marche Apennines, including the Sibillini Mountains and the dramatic Gola della Rossa and Frasassi gorges. Other notable features include the Campodonico pine forest, picturesque secondary meadows, the sources of the Esino river, and a large geological dolina (sinkhole). The summit of Monte Giuoco del Pallone itself has a unique natural amphitheater-shaped hollow.
Beyond the panoramic views from Monte Giuoco del Pallone (1,228 m), you'll pass by Monte Antensa and Pizzinetto di Mutola. The route also leads past the historic Abbey of San Biagio in Caprile, an ancient monastic complex that now hosts a youth hostel.
Autumn is particularly recommended for this hike, as the beech woods along the trail are vibrant with color. Spring and summer also offer pleasant conditions, but be prepared for potentially warmer temperatures in summer. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear for snow and ice conditions.
The Riserva Monte Giuoco del Pallone e Monte Cafaggio is home to one of the rare deer colonies in the Marche region, so you might be lucky enough to spot them. The diverse habitats also support various bird species and smaller mammals.
The trail typically starts from Campodonico. While specific parking areas aren't detailed, you'll generally find parking available in or near the village of Campodonico, which serves as the primary access point for this route into the reserve.
Generally, dogs are permitted on trails within the Riserva Monte Giuoco del Pallone e Monte Cafaggio. However, it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially given the presence of wildlife like deer and to respect other hikers and any grazing animals in the meadows.
As a natural reserve, there are typically no specific permits required or entrance fees to hike the trails within the Riserva Monte Giuoco del Pallone e Monte Cafaggio. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and practice Leave No Trace principles.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of trails known as Frazione Campodonico.
Easter excursion 2022. Cloudy weather, cold and wind didn't stop us! Beautiful track, first in a wooded environment accompanied by a stream, then on open ridges and finally through a wood where the track on the ground is completely lost (saved by GPS!). At the end you go back along the stream.
