Mountain biking

Piz Umbrail represents a fascinating but decidedly demanding challenge for those who love mountain biking. An almost seven-hour tour, with over 2,000 meters in altitude, technical passages and rocks to tackle with the bike on your shoulder: it's not an adventure for those with little experience or for those who prefer pedal assistance. This is a route that requires a great sense of adventure and a good level of physical and technical preparation.

The Tour begins in the Cancano valley, from where you take the climb that leads to the Bocchette di Pedenolo and then to the Bocchette di Forcola, classic destinations for mountain bikers who usually ride them in the opposite direction. This climb, completely pedaled, is an excellent alternative to the Stelvio state road.
Piz Umbrail awaits you at the end of a partially cycled and highly exposed path. You will have to face a two kilometer climb with a difference in altitude of 500 meters, passing high rocks, supporting yourself on fixed ropes in very exposed points. It's a stretch that will keep you busy for at least 50 minutes. The descent from the lace promises breathtaking views and is not particularly difficult, although the terrain is full of stones, especially at the beginning. Continuing, the path becomes more pleasant, offering spectacular views of Lake Rims. The final stretch, more demanding, will take you from Santa Maria to Val Mora, through the Doss Radond, to then conclude the Tour in complete relaxation in the Cancano Valley.

To best face this challenge, remember to prepare yourself adequately and pay attention to the more technical sections. If the climb seems too much, you can consider the option of using a local Bike Shuttle service up to the fourth cantoniera dello Stelvio, from where you can continue with your bike. If you start from Cancano instead, there are several parking options, almost all of which are paid during the high season, or you can rent a bike directly in one of the shops that offer this service right near the lakes.

Piz Umbrail is a destination that will reward you with its breathtaking beauty and unforgettable panoramas. By tackling the most difficult stretches with calm and determination, your effort will be rewarded by panoramic views of vast lunar-looking basins, waterfalls, alpine lakes of intense colors and green pastures. At the end of the Tour, the tranquility of the Val Mora will welcome you, before reaching the placid Lakes of Cancano. Remember: this is a challenge suitable for the most intrepid people, but it's also a unique experience that you won't soon forget.

Getting to Bocchetta di Pedenolo is very hard, but from here the view is unparalleled: on the homonymous mountain, on Monte Braulio and on Monte Radisca.

Piz Umbrail Summit

Highlight • Summit

Piz Umbrail is located at 3,032 meters and is part of the Ortler Alps. It lies directly on the border between Italy and Switzerland. From the summit, you have a perfect panoramic view of the surrounding peaks. Below you, you can see the pass road winding its way up the mountain. Incidentally, the Umbrail Pass is the highest road pass in Switzerland. It's no wonder the border crossing is popular with tourists. However, most cross the pass by motorcycle or car, so you'll be spared the hustle and bustle at the summit of Piz Umbrail.

Val Mora

Highlight (Segment) • Gorge

Val Mora is a valley adjacent to the basin of the Cancano lakes, connected to this by the wine and salt road. It is a wild and untouched valley. A beautiful place for hiking, especially by bike. I highly recommend to visit this place to enjoy nature! 😊

Wine and Salt Road

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Ancient trade route that owes its name to the two main products that passed between Bormio, Livigno, Valdidentro, Valfurva: wine and salt. Today this path can be covered on foot or by bike, and is the main link between Fraele and Val Mora. The panorama is priceless, but be careful that some sections are exposed and there is a gravelly seabed.

To separate Lake Cancano and Lake San Giacomo, there is a dam that can be easily traveled by bike and from which you can enjoy an excellent view over the entire Fraele Valley.

Amazing ride!
Comfortable climb on military road from Cancano lakes, then light push to Rims peak and then Piz Umbrail. Epic descent that I imagine everyone knows, nothing extraordinary or particularly difficult, but very beautiful.
Then climb of about 300m on a cart track and then epic traverse in Switzerland to Cancano lakes.
Consider about 25 km from the end …

One of the most beautiful MTB tours I know! (... and I know quite a few!) There is something for everyone: trails, military roads, great scenery, wonderful nature - a DREAM!

Today's tour is impressive due to the beauty of the landscape!
In terms of bike technique and fitness, however, today wasn't particularly demanding.
We start at the Umbrail Pass, climb up to the Boccheta di Furcola, cross to the Bocchetta Pedenolo, and then ride a very long way down the old World War I military road to the Laco di …

Good morning Federica I would like to plan this tour by modifying it. I would like to do it in reverse and once past Lake Calcano enter Val Mora up to Santa Maria val Musteir and return to Bormio on asphalt. Since you know the area is it feasible? Are there areas that are too exposed? Thanks
