Running

The shelf of land between Gardoms and Birchen Edge has evidence of human use since the Bronze Age. As you run along this secluded edge look out for the Neolithic sundial stone and cup and ring carvings, taking a moment to wonder what it would have been like here 2,500 years ago. Gardoms is the quietest of the edges and a perfect spot for a post-work run through the woodland allowing nature to work its magic. The views west between the gaps in the trees are spectacular, out to the Derwent valley and the pretty village of Baslow, with Longstone moor rising opposite.

The Tour heads away from the crowds straight away, running east from the start towards White Edge. From here it traverses the length of Gardoms Edge and dips through the Bar Brook valley to finish along Baslow Edge. At 4.7 miles (7.5 km) it takes most runners up to an hour to complete.

This Tour explores some of the lesser-used trails but they're mostly clear and easy to follow. Some sections can get a bit muddy in wet weather, so we’d suggest trail shoes with good grip. It’s less exposed than other routes high on the edges around here but more remote, so we’d still carry basic emergency kit and a jacket just in case.

If you intend to travel by public transport it’s easiest to catch the bus to the Robin Hood pub on the Chesterfield road and join the Tour at the southern end of Gardoms Edge.

At busy times there’s usually a snack van at Curbar Gap car park, but you won’t find any facilities or other refreshment stops on route. To refuel after your run head to Cafe 19 or the Eyre Arms at Calver crossroads. For more cafes, shops and accommodation, Baslow, Bakewell or Hathersage are closest.

Gardoms Edge

Highlight • Climb

Gardoms is at the southern end of the long gritstone outcrop that stretches across the Dark Peak. It's more secluded than the other edges, almost in trees and away from the popular walks. It's very pretty with good views over the Derwent Valley and across to Wellington's Monument on Baslow Edge. Look out for the Neolithic rock art and sundial stone on the plain between Gardoms and Birchen Edge.

Neolithic cup and ring markings sighted slightly away from Gardoms edge. The actual rock is buried here to protect the art and what you see is a full-scale replica of the rock and art. It looks authentic but doesn't feel right. Standing nearby is what is suggested to be a seasonal sundial stone. The north side of the stone is in permanent shadow through the winter. This is thought to date to between 1500- & 2500-years BCE. Erected in the Neolithic or early Bronze age.

The Wellington Monument on Baslow Edge commemorates Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852). Wellington was British supreme commander during the Napoleonic Wars and rose to fame after his victory in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. He later became prime minister.

Baslow Edge

Highlight • Climb

This dramatic gritstone edge offers wonderful views over the Peaks, towards the Chatsworth Estate and beyond. It is lovely moorland single track riding up here; ruts, stones, grit and heather. Perfect.
