Rifugio Santa Maria dei Monti

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Santa Maria dei Monti Refuge is located in Scala (SA), in the Monti Lattari regional park, at over a thousand meters above sea level.
Opposite the refuge is Mount Campanaro overlooking the Gulf of Salerno, where the small altar with the statue of the Madonna is located. From here the view dominates the towns of Scala, Ravello and Maiori from above.
The Refuge has 13 beds, divided into two floors in two separate small, completely independent apartments with bathroom and kitchen.
A 15-minute walk from the refuge leads to the Vrecciaro water where you can enjoy a unique sunset overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The Refuge can be reached from Scala, Ravello, Agerola and the various municipalities that surround it. 15 minutes away is the high path via dei Monti Lattari, the famous path 300 which starts from Cava dei Tirreni and ends at Punta Campanella.
Sant’ Alfonso Maria de Liguori lived in the refuge for most of his life and it was in Scala that he wrote the famous "You come down from the stars" in a cave.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Valle delle Ferriere High Trail Loop typically take to hike?

The full loop is approximately 18.3 km (11.4 miles) long and generally takes around 7 hours and 18 minutes to complete. Keep in mind that the stone staircases can be quite tiring, so allow for sufficient time.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The trail features diverse terrain, including paths through dense forests, alongside streams, and past numerous waterfalls. A significant characteristic is the presence of stone staircases, which contribute to elevation changes. Deeper in the valley, the environment can be wet, and paths may be uneven and slippery, especially near waterfalls.

Is the Valle delle Ferriere High Trail Loop suitable for beginners?

While generally classified as moderate difficulty, the trail includes demanding stone staircases that can be tiring even for experienced hikers. It is not recommended for individuals with knee or hip issues, or those who experience vertigo. If you're accustomed to long-distance walking, you might find it manageable, but it's not ideal for absolute beginners due to the elevation changes and potentially slippery sections.

What unique natural features or plants can I see along the way?

The trail is renowned for its unique microclimate, which supports ancient plant species like the giant fern Woodwardia radicans, often described as a 'living fossil'. You'll also encounter numerous waterfalls, refreshing streams, and might spot small amphibians like the spectacled salamander. The lush greenery and rocky cliffs create a 'prehistoric wonderland' atmosphere.

What are the main points of interest or highlights along the route?

Along the route, you'll discover several notable spots. These include the challenging Stairway to Punta delle Castagne, the welcoming Rifugio Santa Maria dei Monti, and the scenic Piano del Ceraso Trail. You'll also pass the Spring of the Sentiero Italia and Alta Via dei Monti Lattari, reach the Croce di Scupolo Summit, and encounter a significant Trail junction to Scala, Valle delle Ferriere Nature Reserve, Agerola, and Pogerola.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route covers significant sections of the Sentiero alto della Valle delle Ferriere. It also intersects with parts of the Sentiero Italia - Tappa S19S, Itinerario del Paradiso, and the Alta Via dei Monti Lattari - 05, among others.

What is the best time of year to hike the Valle delle Ferriere High Trail Loop?

The unique microclimate makes it pleasant for much of the year. However, spring and autumn generally offer the most comfortable temperatures and vibrant scenery. During summer, the valley provides a refreshing escape from the coastal heat due to its abundant water and shade, but paths can still be humid and potentially slippery.

Is the Valle delle Ferriere High Trail Loop dog-friendly?

The trail is generally considered dog-friendly, but due to the presence of numerous stone staircases, uneven terrain, and potentially slippery sections, it might be challenging for some dogs, especially smaller or older ones. Always keep your dog on a leash, especially in the nature reserve, and ensure they are comfortable with strenuous climbs and descents.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for hiking in Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari or the Valle delle Ferriere?

While the Valle delle Ferriere is part of the Parco Regionale dei Monti Lattari, there are typically no general entrance fees or permits required to hike the main trails like this loop. However, there is a restricted area within the valley, the 'Riserva Naturale Orientata', which features the Grand Waterfall. Access to this specific area might have different regulations or limited entry, so it's always best to check local signage or official park information if you plan to deviate from the main path.

Where can I park or access the trailhead for this loop?

The loop starts and ends near Scala. While specific parking details aren't provided, Scala is a common starting point. It's advisable to research parking options in Scala or nearby towns like Pontone before your visit, as parking can be limited in Amalfi Coast towns. Public transport options to Scala are also available from larger centers.

What should I wear and bring for this hike?

Given the diverse terrain, including stone staircases and potentially wet, slippery paths, sturdy hiking boots with good grip are essential. Layers of clothing are recommended due to microclimate variations. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a waterproof jacket, especially if you plan to explore deeper into the valley where the 'rain effect' is common. Trekking poles can also be very helpful for stability on descents.

Trail Reviews

"il Viandante Dei Dilettanti" Gianfranco
February 5, 2025, COSTIERA AMALFITANA - Alta via della valle delle ferriere da Pogerola

EXCURSION DATE: 05 FEBRUARY 2025 KM 20 ITINERARY ALTA VIA DELLA VALLE DELLE FERRIERE from Pogerola a circular tour passing through locality Paradiso - Monte Molignano - Monte - Pontichito - Croce di Scupolo - loc. Imbarrata - Monte Rotondo - Belvedere Mustaculo - Ruins of the Castle - Pellagra - Fic'a noce - Ceraso - Paradiso - Pogerola mainly following the CAI 301 route. Water points: Pogerola piazzetta - fountain about 3 km from the Start (photo 14) - Fic'a Noce waterfall (filter or tablets to purify the water recommended) after about 16 km, and other nearby waterfalls. Vegetation: irrelevant Life forms: No dangerous or aggressive animals, some donkeys, horses and humans. The tour was quite (for me very) challenging. From Pogerola for a long route of about 12 km to the Mustaculo viewpoint there are no particular difficulties, the path is clearly visible, some sections are also very wide in fact we found cars and trucks. Nothing to report negatively, but only a beautiful route and many beautiful views. Arriving at the viewpoint, which is very close to Santa Maria dei Monti about 12 km from the start of the route, we stopped for lunch with a view of Amalfi, Pogerola, Ravello. Totally absent from everything and everyone, I thought about when I went to Amalfi or Ravello and saw those very high mountains of rock and thought: "who knows if one day I will be able to go up there, on those rocks, to see what is there". Today I can say I made it and the view from the belvedere is amazing... Seeing the entire chain of the first part of the Lattari mountains (Avvocata, Monte Finestra, the crests of the state property, Monte Sant'Angelo) all depicted in a splendid living postcard, with the Picentini in the background, Seeing Amalfi, Ravello, Pogerola "from the other side" was all very exciting for me. I could have stayed there and spent the night in a tent in front of a fire... too bad I didn't have a tent though. After this pleasant moment things start to get tough and the tough start to play... The descent from the belvedere to the ruins of the castle is very steep, mostly on rock and the path is not very visible, for this reason classified EE. Even after the ruins up to the Pellagra location the scenery changes a bit... we leave behind the "comfortable" paths taken previously, to make room for something more challenging and not so pleasant. Paths sometimes covered by bushes and on rocks, hidden and sometimes completely disappeared signs, passages on rocks even exposed, do not allow distractions and relaxation. I do not recommend THIS STRETCH to everyone, at least not to tackle it alone but with someone experienced or even better if he knows the place. It is very easy to get lost and difficult to get out so much so that it was almost sunset for us. Once we reached Localita Pellagra, after the ordeal, we continued towards fic'a noce where we delighted in a last daytime view of the waterfall, after which we continued the path in the darkness illuminated by our head torches. This part of today's adventure was also very fascinating. Having reached our destination at around 7 pm we were all a little destroyed but very happy and full of joy for having faced this beautiful and very hard path, full of pitfalls but also spectacular passages and landscapes.

The actual difference in altitude is about 1200 m on the path from the castle to Fic a Noce, which in many sections is practically non-existent and has few traces.

Unfortunately at one point the app was disconnected and the track is not precise (where you see the straight line)
