The Col de Pailhères or Port de Pailhères is an emblematic passage in the Pyrenees. Culminating at 2,001 meters above sea level, it stands as a magnificent link between the resort of Ax-les-Thermes and the Ariège gorges. The Tour de France used it for the first time in 2003.
The start of this great loop is at the Ax-les-Thermes SNCF station. The mountain resort has the advantage of being as attractive in winter as in summer. The route begins by immediately climbing to the heights of the city. It continues until you reach the Col du Pradet which is a great first ascent. After a few bends downhill you come across the Rébenty which flows down the valley. He will be the guarantor of a magnificent section that wanders through beautiful gorges for about thirty kilometers until reaching the Aude.
You then dive into new gorges, those of the Aude this time. They take care of taking you to Usson-les-Bains on a slight uphill false flat. This is where the climb officially begins towards the Col de Pailhères. Relatively regular, it has about twenty hairpin bends that are above the Mijanès-Donezan station. The last part of the climb includes passages around 10%.
At the top, enjoy the magnificent panoramas that unfold before you before falling into a superb descent. This one also has a few switchbacks but much less than the other side. Gradually you dive into the valley until you find your starting point in Ax-les-Thermes.
