The Aubisque and Soulor passes are two of the most emblematic passes in the Pyrenees and the Tour de France. The first was climbed for the first time in 1910 while the second had to wait until 1935 before entering the history of the great loop. I suggest you discover them as part of a loop that starts from Louvie-Juzon which is at the gates of the Ossau valley.

The first portion up to Laruns is on a slightly rising false flat which allows you to warm up before undertaking the mythical ascent. From the charming village, the climb begins. It extends over more than 16 kilometers crossing the spa town of Eaux-Bonnes then the ski resort of Gourette. The last part includes the most important percentages.
Perched at 1,709 meters above sea level, you are at the highest point of the route.

A magnificent section then takes you to the Col du Soulor. You borrow a balcony which offers spectacular sights on the circus of Lithor below. You then have to overcome a final climb to reach the 1,474 meters of altitude of Soulor. The descent takes place in the very beautiful valley of Ferrières then continues along the Ouzom. In the village of Arthez-d'Asson you leave the main axis to embark on a less busy road which brings you back to your starting point.

August 12, 2021,What mad pursuit: Climbing Col d'Aubisque
Suffering in the sweltering heat climbing the mythical 'hors de categorie' Col d'Aubisque (1,709m) in the Pyrenees, I kept hearing distant cowbells, like echoes of Greek epics full of struggle, honour, wrath, treachery and glory.

Since the publication in 1957 of Roland Barthes' collection of essays "Mythologies", which includes a classic essay on Tour de France, journalists have mythologised cycling …
