Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to complete the Hérisson waterfalls loop?

The full loop trail usually takes around 2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the waterfalls and scenery.

What is the difficulty level and terrain like on the Hérisson waterfalls loop?

The Hérisson waterfalls loop is generally classified as a moderate hike. You'll experience an elevation gain and loss of approximately 255 to 279 meters (836 to 915 feet). The path follows the Hérisson River, featuring some steep sections, particularly between the Fan Waterfall and Saut de la Forge. Passages over rock can be slippery due to humidity, and narrow sections are present. Proper hiking shoes are highly recommended.

Where can I park and access the Hérisson waterfalls trail?

The trail has multiple starting points. While specific parking locations aren't detailed, the presence of various access points suggests parking facilities are available at different entry points to the loop. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival for designated parking areas.

What are the main highlights and waterfalls I'll see along the route?

The trail is famous for its sequence of seven waterfalls. Key highlights include the impressive Fan Waterfall (Cascade de l'Eventail), the powerful Le Grand Saut, and Saut Girard. Other notable spots include Moulin Jeunet Ruins and Waterfall, The Blue Pool, Garnier Castle, and Saut de la Forge. You'll also pass through lush forests and see remnants of old water mills.

Is the Hérisson waterfalls loop suitable for families or those seeking an easier walk?

While the full loop is moderate, more accessible options exist. For instance, a short walk to the Saut Girard viewpoint is suitable for strollers and those with reduced mobility, offering a taste of the waterfalls without the full challenge.

Is the Hérisson waterfalls loop dog-friendly?

The information available does not explicitly state whether dogs are allowed or under what conditions. It's best to check local regulations or signage at the trailhead regarding dog access and leash requirements before your visit.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for the Hérisson waterfalls?

The Hérisson waterfalls area is a protected natural site and a recognized heritage site in France. There is no mention of a specific hiking permit or entrance fee required to access the trails themselves. However, parking fees may apply at certain access points.

When is the best time of year to visit the Hérisson waterfalls?

The waterfalls flow year-round, but their volume varies with seasons and weather conditions. Spring and autumn often offer vibrant foliage and good water flow. Winter can be beautiful with ice formations, but conditions can be slippery. Summer is popular, but trails might be more crowded. Visiting outside peak hours can enhance the experience.

What should I wear and bring for the Hérisson waterfalls hike?

Given the potential for slippery conditions, especially on rocky sections and in winter, proper hiking shoes with good grip are highly recommended. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, and bring water, snacks, and a small first-aid kit. Remember to take out all rubbish to preserve the natural beauty of the site.

Are there any regulations or special considerations for hiking in the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura?

Yes, as part of a 'Grand Site de France' and located within the Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura, the area is carefully protected. It's crucial to stay on marked paths, avoid littering, and respect the natural environment. Swimming in the waterfalls is generally prohibited to safeguard the delicate ecosystem.

Does the Hérisson waterfalls loop intersect other well-known paths?

Trail Reviews

Andi
August 22, 2025, Von Bonlieu nach Ruinen des Moulin Jeunet und Wasserfall

Very nice tour, but the Cascades are very busy in August - rush hour on part of the route.

Markings all along (PR and GR). Very beautiful site of the waterfalls but a lot of people in summer. The continuation of the hike by the more distant paths for the return allows to find a little calm and to benefit from very beautiful rural landscapes.
