Hiking
The Balaïtous, or pico de los Moros, is an emblematic summit of the Pyrenees chain which culminates at 3,144 meters above sea level. Straddling the border between Spain and France, it is the first peak to rise above 3,000 meters from the Atlantic Ocean.
The final ascent via the Passage de la Diagonale makes it a summit reserved for people accustomed to the mountains. It includes a steep drop, combined with passages where the use of hands is necessary. Wearing a helmet is recommended for this passage before protecting yourself from possible landslides.
The proposed route begins in the Ossau valley at the Caillou de Soques car park. The path climbs through the forest before opening into a beautiful valley. From then on, the Arrious becomes your common thread on the first part of the course. Indeed, you go up its stream, reach its pass and then discover its superb lake. Then follows the vertiginous passage of Orteig. Without real difficulty, it remains impressive for its exposure. A cable ensures safe passage.
A few meters further on, the Arrémoulit refuge appears on the edge of a pretty lake. This refuge is ideal for taking a break, or even for a stopover. Indeed the second part of the ascent has much more elevation on rocky ground. A short climb leads to the Col d'Arrémoulit which offers a magnificent panorama of Lake Arriel below, and the Balaïtous in the background.
From the Michaud shelter, nestled at the foot of an imposing cliff, the end of the ascent becomes steeper and you take the famous Diagonal passage. Without particular difficulty, it requires some experience in the mountains to overcome it. As you gain height, the scenery behind you becomes more and more spectacular.
At the top, where bivouac is possible, it is guaranteed wonder. The Balaïtous dominates the granite massif of the same name. It offers breathtaking views of the many lakes and mountain ibóns that surround it. Not to mention the unique belvedere it provides for admiring the Pic du Midi d'Ossau.
The return is made on exactly the same path as on the way out. Although possible in a single day, I strongly advise you to cut this hike into at least two days to really savor the remarkable sites it takes you through. You can also get rid of some of your equipment at the Arrémoulit refuge or at the Michaud shelter. Without forgetting that the bivouac at the top remains one of the most beautiful in the Pyrenees chain.
