Suscinio Castle

Highlight • Castle

Located on the Rhuys peninsula, this castle was abandoned until it was included on the very first list of historical monuments in 1840. The castle dates from the early 1200s.

Shortly after the campsite, a boardwalk starts along the coast. Forest on the left, beach and the sea on the right. The wood is very pleasant to walk on. Great view, especially a highlight at sunrise and sunset

Very nice hike. However, next time I would skip the extra loop around the château, as it is first on an asphalt road and then becomes a hiking trail around the castle. It could be made shorter.

Showing Translation

A very well marked circuit offering a beautiful walk around the Château de Suscinio and its marshes. The coastal path will take you to the beaches of Roaliguen, Beg Lann, Greves and Suscinio.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the Ocean View Trail – Saint-Jacques Suscinio Variant and how difficult is it?

This variant of the Ocean View Trail is approximately 22 kilometers (13.7 miles) long. It is rated as a difficult hike, typically taking around 5 hours and 30 minutes to complete due to its length and varied terrain.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The trail offers a diverse mix of landscapes. You'll experience traditional rural 'bocage' with hollow paths, dramatic coastal sections along the Atlantic Ocean, marshes, sandy beaches (like Roaliguen, Beg Lan, and Suscinio), and dunes. Parts of the path, especially near Roaliguen beach, feature wooden boardwalks. You may also encounter dirt paths, wooded areas, and some road crossings.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

A significant highlight is the opportunity to visit Suscinio Castle, a medieval castle and former residence of the Dukes of Brittany. The trail also features a Coastal boardwalk in the Golfe du Morbihan Regional Natural Park, vernacular heritage like fountains and wells, and panoramic views of the islands of Houat and Hoëdic, and the chapel of Penvins.

Is the Ocean View Trail – Saint-Jacques Suscinio Variant dog-friendly?

Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, as parts of the trail pass through sensitive natural areas within the Golfe du Morbihan Regional Natural Park and along coastal sections, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn often offer the most pleasant hiking conditions with milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Summer can be beautiful, but coastal sections may be exposed to strong sun and wind. Be mindful of seasonal considerations, especially regarding weather changes in the Gulf of Morbihan.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for the trail or the Parc naturel régional du Golfe du Morbihan?

Hiking the Ocean View Trail – Saint-Jacques Suscinio Variant itself does not require specific permits or entrance fees. The Parc naturel régional du Golfe du Morbihan is a regional natural park, meaning access to its trails and natural spaces is generally free. However, if you plan to enter Suscinio Castle, there will be an admission fee.

Where can I park to access the trailhead?

While specific parking details for this exact variant are not provided, trails in the Suscinio area typically have parking available near the Château de Suscinio or at various access points along the coast, such as near the beaches of Roaliguen or Suscinio. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Can I shorten the route if I find it too challenging?

Yes, it is possible to shorten the route. The trail research mentions that you can return via Roaliguen beach, which offers an option to cut the hike shorter if needed.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see?

The area around Suscinio Castle, particularly the surrounding ponds and marshes, is a sensitive natural space rich in remarkable fauna and flora. You might spot various bird species, especially water birds in the marsh areas, and other local wildlife adapted to coastal and wetland environments.

Is this trail suitable for families with young children?

Given its classification as a 'difficult' hike and its length of 22 kilometers, this specific variant is generally not recommended for families with young children or beginner hikers. Shorter, easier sections or alternative trails in the Golfe du Morbihan Regional Natural Park would be more suitable for a family outing.
