Hiking

The Delicate Arch Trail offers an unforgettable journey through Arches National Park's dramatic red rock landscape, leading to Utah's most iconic natural arch. You'll navigate a varied terrain, starting on a relatively flat path before ascending a steep, exposed slickrock slope marked by cairns, with stunning panoramic views unfolding around you. The route winds through desert scrub, sandstone fins, and spires, eventually revealing the magnificent Delicate Arch, often framed by the nearby Frame Arch.

Planning your visit requires careful consideration of the elements. This 3.3-mile (5.3 km) hike, with 544 feet (166 metres) of elevation gain and an estimated duration of 1 hour and 55 minutes, is rated moderate but can feel strenuous due to the lack of shade and significant climb. In summer, temperatures often exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, necessitating early morning or late afternoon starts and plenty of water. Winter hikers should be prepared for ice and snow on steep sections, requiring traction devices.

Delicate Arch is not just a geological wonder; it's a symbol of Utah, standing 46 feet high and 32 feet wide. Along the trail, you'll also encounter historical landmarks like the Wolfe Ranch cabin and ancient Ute Indian petroglyphs, adding cultural depth to the natural beauty. The trail culminates in a natural amphitheater where you can admire the arch, making it a truly rewarding experience despite its popularity.

Delicate Arch Trailhead

Highlight • Trail

The Delicate Arch Trailhead is where the trail to the famous Delicate Arch begins. There are bathrooms, places to sit, and some informational signs at the start of the trail by the parking lot. Because of the iconic destination, the Delicate Arch Trailhead can be a busy place at almost all hours of the day. Please plan accordingly; parking is limited and expect plenty of other people on the trails. While you can continue down the road (but please do not park on the road!) to potentially more parking at the Delicate Arch Viewpoint lot, be aware that the Delicate Arch Trail cannot be accessed from there; you would need to walk back on the road to reach the true trail to the arch.

Wolfe Ranch Cabin

Highlight • Historical Site

The Wolfe Ranch (later "Turnbow Cabin," after the first caretaker of Arches National Park who lived there) was built by injured Civil War veteran John Wesley Wolfe and his son. Though far from the first people to live in this area long inhabited by the Zuni, Hopi, Ute, Paiute, and other American Indian peoples, the Wolfes scraped together a ranch-based lifestyle in a climate that seems incompatible and inhospitable for it to most visitors today. A jarring juxtaposition to the busy Delicate Arch Trail crowds, a visit to the ranch is thought-provoking and worthwhile.

Salt Wash River

Highlight • River

Salt Wash is a freshwater spring deep in the heart of Arches National Park. This year-round spring is quite rare and enabled Indigenous people, who have lived in the Moab area for millennia, to survive and thrive in the desert. Salt Wash also allowed the Wolf family to build their ranch (the remains of which is just a short distance from the spring), plant crops, and raise cattle. Salt Wash continues to be an important water source for desert plants and animals so please refrain from entering the waters. The Delicate Arch Trail crosses a wooden bridge over this unique, historically and ecologically important stream.

Petroglyph Panel near Wolfe Ranch

Highlight • Historical Site

Just a short distance (a few hundred feet) off the main Delicate Arch trail is an beautiful panel of petroglyphs (images chipped into the rock rather than painted onto it). This particular panel depicts figures on horseback, which helps historians date it to 1650s, the approximate time that Indigenous groups in this area acquired horses. More specifically, because of the riders on horseback, historians believe that this panel depicts the Ute people because there were quick to adopt the animals after the Spanish reintroduced them to North America. This amazing piece of Indigenous art and history is a must see if doing the Delicate Arch Trail!

Delicate Arch Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Delicate Arch Trail is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, trails in Arches National Park. This picturesque trail takes you through many different types of desert landscapes. On the Delicate Arch Trail you travel up and over domes of slickrock, through sandy washes with juniper trees, in between colorful hills, and eventually up a "sidewalk" cut deep into a cliffside to Delicate Arch, arguably the most iconic feature in the park, if not the United States. While the trail is not exceptionally steep, there is practically no shade the entire way; bring plenty of water and remember to protect your skin from the sun!

Frame Arch

Highlight • Natural Monument

Frame Arch is a picturesque arch along the Delicate Arch Trail and perhaps would receive more attention if it weren't for the fact that Delicate Arch is practically around the corner from it. Nevertheless, it is worth pausing at this arch to snap a photo or two, sip some water and get ready for the final push to Delicate Arch.

Delicate Arch

Highlight • Natural Monument

When you arrive at the Delicate Arch there will be a lot of people waiting in line to get a picture. After all, it is the most popular natural landmark in Arches National Park. If you want to get a picture of the arch without the crowd, walk ahead and turn right to get a little lower. Or visit it around sunrise or sunset when there is fewer people around.

The exploration of Utah continues and is highly recommended for a road trip.
Since it has already proven itself in Yellowstone, this time there were 3 tours to see as much as possible.
Even though it was October, it was super hot and very sunny there. The landscapes were unique and sometimes very different.
And again it's a place that …

An absolutely impressive hike at high Y temperatures. The ascent over the smooth rocks is not to be underestimated. Enough water, sun protection and hat are mandatory here. And the weather, in our case an approaching thunderstorm, should not be underestimated. That's why the Arch is so impressive! And the view also rewards the ascent. A very worthwhile tour!

After a quite strenuous hike (the second of the day), we reach today's mega-highlight: the "Delicate Arch," a stone arch standing free on the edge of a rocky hollow, with the snow-capped peaks of the La Sal Mountains in the background. A sight of majestic beauty.

The relatively short (35 minute) climb can be very strenuous as there is no shade and the rock reflects the heat: bring plenty of water!
