This route was planned by komoot.
The hike typically begins at a car park located between the village of Piana and Arone Beach. It's the primary access point for the trail.
This trail is generally rated as difficult. While navigation is straightforward, the significant elevation gain, especially the steep final ascent to the tower, makes it physically demanding. Factors like heat and sun exposure also contribute to its challenging nature.
The best times to hike are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). It is not recommended in hot weather due to very little shade and high exposure to the sun.
No specific permits or entrance fees are required to hike the Capo Rosso trail itself. However, the trail is part of the Calanques de Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which means respecting the natural environment is paramount.
While not explicitly prohibited, the trail's difficult terrain, significant sun exposure, and potential for rock scrambling, especially on the final ascent, make it challenging for dogs. Consider your dog's fitness and the weather conditions carefully before bringing them.
The trail starts on a dirt track through maquis vegetation. As you approach the cape, the terrain becomes narrower, stonier, and winds through rocks. The final climb to the tower is quite steep and can involve some easy rock scrambling.
The primary highlight is the Turghiu Tower, a 16th-century Genoese watchtower offering unparalleled 360-degree panoramic views. Throughout the hike, you'll experience breathtaking vistas of dramatic red and pink granite cliffs, the Mediterranean Sea, the Gulf of Porto, and the Scandola Peninsula.
The hike is approximately 7 km long and typically takes around 3 hours and 20 minutes to complete, depending on your pace and how long you spend enjoying the views at the summit.
There is very little shade along most of the Capo Rosso trail. Sun protection, such as a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses, is crucial, especially during warmer months.
There are no facilities or natural water sources directly on the trail. It's essential to carry sufficient water for the entire duration of your hike, especially given the sun exposure and physical demands.
Despite its name, the Capo Rosso trail is primarily an out-and-back hike to the Turghiu Tower. You return along the same path you took to reach the summit.
Challenging route for those with climbing skills otherwise take the classic route (the one I did on the way back). Spectacular views and in June the osprey nesting. If it's hot, bring at least 2 liters of water each.
The return trip recommended by Komoot is no longer available. Paths are not marked, walled up with stones and completely overgrown. So it's the same route back and forth.
Spectacular hike to a very well-preserved Genoese watchtower with a magnificent view of the rugged rocky coast. In summer, be sure to take plenty of water with you, as there are only a few shady places to stay. We decided on the way there for the mountaineering variant with climbing in the second degree. Those who are not free from giddiness should follow the signposted hiking trail. Otherwise you can use the cairns as a guide for the more demanding variant. The Komoot information is not really correct, you need about 3 hours of pure walking time.
Hike in October, in very good weather (27°). Departure at 9:30 a.m. The start is easy, up to the refuge. We go down regularly...which also means that we will have to go up on the way back, when the legs are already well tested. Alternating open passages and maquis. There is shade but it is still rare on the route, and absolutely absent on the climb that leads to the tower. No technical passage, the rock does not slip, but this last steep path is demanding. It is absolutely necessary to avoid doing it during the hottest hours. Arrival at the tower ... what happiness. The view is splendid.
A beautiful hike to the Gourmet Tower at Capu Rossu. Easy hike with a short section through rocky terrain. Sturdy footwear (low-cut approach shoes or sturdy, stiffer sneakers) is required. Surefootedness is required.
The trip is 3h30 and not 2h20 as indicated by Komoot. Provide plenty to drink. Steep path .. 550 m vertical drop ..
Follow the 'sentier littoral' for a less crowded option
