Heights of Fontarabie – running in the Basque Country

Running

Superb loop of 23 kilometers in the Spanish Basque Country, very close to the French border.
In proportion to the distance, the elevation gain of approximately 650 meters is affordable. Nevertheless, it remains relatively demanding given the terrain.

The route begins at Cape Higuer in the town of Hondarribia, “Hondarribia” in Spanish. This seaside resort faces Hendaye in the bay of Chingoudy. A campsite car park allows you to park a few meters from the starting point.

The first nine kilometers are mostly uphill. The first portion takes tracks and a bit of road that runs through small forests. As you progress, the landscape clears up and very quickly some superb viewpoints open up.
You go around Fort Guadeloupe before climbing onto Mount Erramutz. Take the time to turn around to admire the superb view of the bay.

The path continues to climb up to Jaizkibel, the highest point of your outing. Easily recognizable by its large antenna, it suggests a magnificent 360 degree panorama. You can admire the Atlantic facade and guess its extension which sinks into Spain. On the other side, there are several peaks of the Basque Country including the Rhune.

The first part of the descent is on a rocky section before continuing on a wider track that leads to the coast. This winding portion is really nice. At the cost of short climbs and descents, you discover pretty little coves.

All you have to do is go back up along the coast to find your starting point.
I advise you to take enough water and a small snack, because you will not find anything to sustain yourself on the way.
