Mountain biking

Set off from the historic town of Lewes on an undulating adventure that boasts spectacular views throughout. You'll also get a taste of Lewes as you wind through the narrow medieval streets that are full of character.

The route climbs out of Lewes to Mount Harry and joins the South Downs Way, which weaves through Castle Hill, an area of rich chalk grassland designated a National Nature Reserve. You'll pass through Kingston village before a scenic descent into Lewes via Juggs Road, a wide open track passing the delightful Ashcombe Windmill.

The adventure is full of spectacular riding along ridgeways, with sweeping views out to Lewes and beyond. The elevation profile is a rollercoaster of ups and downs, promising both gruelling climbs and exhilarating descents.

Three-quarters of the route is off-road with a few bumpy sections, so a mountain bike is best for this trip. A gravel bike with wide tyres would also suffice.

You'll pass two pubs at either end of this route. The first is The Blacksmiths Arms, close to the start in Offham, and the second is The Juggs pub in Kingston near to the end of the route. You'll also find plenty of cafes, restaurants and supermarkets at your start and endpoint in Lewes.

Lewes station is served by regular trains from Brighton, London Victoria, Hastings, Seaford and Eastbourne. As parking in Lewes is limited, I'd recommend starting in Kingston if you choose to drive. Here you'll find unrestricted parking on most of the village roads.

Offham Woodland Bridleway Ridge

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This woodland link connects Lewes to Offham, and offers a safer and more scenic alternative than cycling along the busy A275. The woodland track runs along a chalky ridge which overlooks the River Ouse. It can get quite muddy in places after rain but generally the surface is compact throughout.

Lewes Beacon on Mount Harry

Highlight • Historical Site

The locally well-known Lewes Beacon stands on top of Mount Harry and commands beautiful views over the town and surrounding countryside.

Historically, the beacon was used as a signal point during times of conflict and also as a place for locals to gather and celebrate. Today, the landmark is a popular spot for walkers and anyone looking for a refreshing nature fix.

Bullock Hill Ridge Track

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This grassy ridge top track is one of the best sections of cycling in the Castle Hill area. It edges around the slopes of Bullock Hill from Norton Drive to Standean Bottom, offfering spectacular views of the valley below.

View of Lewes from Breach Road Ridge

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This scenic ridge links the South Downs Way with the small hamlet of Swanborough. It's a dramatic alternative to Dencher Road, a corrugated concrete sections of track which leads down the same ridge.

As you cycle down this chalky trail you'll be treated to stunning views over Lewes and the South Downs. It's well surfaced at the top but becomes a bit bumpier the further you go down.
