Hiking

From Bad Driburg, this long circular hike takes you along part of the Eggeweg quality trail over the promising Eggekamm to the magnificent Heerse moated castle and through idyllic forests back to the starting point. With a full 25 kilometers and some inclines, this tour is something for an extensive day trip.

You start at the pavilion at the level crossing in Bad Driburg. Here you will find sufficient parking spaces and the train station is also only a few minutes' walk away. You go through the pedestrian zone, past the Tourist Information. Soon you will leave the last houses behind and immerse yourself in the wonderful nature around Bad Driburg. A first climb takes you past the ruins of the Iburg up to the Eggeweg, the first hiking trail in Germany with the seal of quality "Wanderbares Deutschland Quality Trail".

You hike through picturesque forests in the direction of Neuenheerse. In spring wild garlic, wood anemone, corydalis and cowslip cover the forest floor and transform it into a wonderfully colorful landscape with their blossoms. On the way there are wooden shelters for a rest.

Arrived in Neuenheerse, you can visit the museum in the Heerse moated castle (Saturdays from 2 p.m. or by prior arrangement). Over 20,000 exhibits are on display in the magnificent palace. Next door is the imposing collegiate church of St. Saturnina, which is visible from afar and is popularly known as the Eggedom.

You follow the Annette-von-Droste-Hülshoff-Weg through the vast forests to the small town of Siebenstern. Glass was produced there in glassworks from the 14th century. You still have to conquer one last small climb after the village before you hike down to Bad Driburg and reach the starting point.

Glassmakers' Monument, Bad Driburg

Highlight • Monument

The importance of glass in the region around Bad Driburg is comparable to that of coal and steel in the Ruhr area. The glassmaking tradition here goes back several centuries and has its origins in the forest glassworks. For a long time, the forest offered a main raw material for glass production: wood. When the tree population in the vicinity of the glassworks was exhausted, the glassmakers moved on.

After climbing 80 steps in the narrow stairwell, wonderful views of Bad Driburg and the Eggegebirge open up. If the weather plays along and the lighting conditions are favorable, the prerequisites for good panorama photos are given.

Iburg castle ruins

Highlight • Castle

I don't know how many ruined castles endure a wandering life. But something remains of the Iburg, because on a tour you learn so much about the history with the help of descriptive materials that it is easy to get an idea of it. With castle walls and castle gate, keep and palace, castle chapel and castle fountain. Side effect: There are a number of shady spots that are wonderful for a little break.

The beech forests in the "Forests between Iburg and Aschenhütte" protected area not only invite you to go on a hike in summer. They already show their best side in spring. Numerous herbaceous plants blossom from mid-April to mid-May. The forest floor then resembles a colorful patchwork quilt. The violet of the larkspur, the blue of the violet or the yellow of the cowslip compete with the white of the wild garlic and the wood anemone.

With the “Waldwelten” mobile phone app, you can listen to audio stories at 17 experience stations and immerse yourself in the magic of the forest. And with a bit of luck you will discover the black woodpecker, because only he is able to create a nest hole in healthy beeches. And since he always uses several caves and likes to move once in a while, he creates space for new tenants such as stock pigeons or bats.
