Hiking
Embark on the difficult Passo Sella Sissanis and Lago Bordaglia ring tour, a challenging 8.9-mile (14.3 km) hike with a significant 3230 feet (984 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 5 hours and 30 minutes. You will traverse varied terrain, from gravel paths and old mule tracks to unpaved sections and scree, as you wind through spruce and larch forests. The route offers magnificent views of the Carnic Alps, including prominent peaks like Creta di Bordaglia, and leads you to the enchanting, emerald waters of Lago Bordaglia and the distinctively shaped Lago Pera. You can also follow the Rio Bordaglia through a deep gorge, experiencing an oasis of quiet natural beauty.
This demanding route requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and some alpine experience. Plan your visit during summer months to potentially find casere, like Casera Bordaglia di Sotto, offering cold dishes and overnight stays, and remember to fill your water bottles at sources like "Goccia di Carnia." Autumn is particularly rewarding, as the larches transform the landscape with spectacular orange and yellow hues.
The trail lies within the Bordaglia-Fleons wildlife oasis, a naturally valuable area rich in diverse vegetation, including wild flowers and orchids, and home to chamois, marmots, and golden eagles. The region also boasts significant geological features, such as the Val di Bordaglia Line, and holds historical importance as a site of intense fighting during World War I, with relics still visible along former front lines. You can extend your adventure with a detour to Passo Giramondo or shorten it by taking direct paths to Casera Bordaglia di Sopra.
