A real insider tip! While everyone seems to be on their way to Beinn Eighe and Loch Maree, this pretty spot of land remains almost untouched. The path leads with great views of the mountains past a Caledonian pine forest and later through swampy terrain over babbling torrents to Bad an Sgalaig lake. This makes this tour one of the few I have done that you don't necessarily have to do before 8 if you want to enjoy it in peace. Even at 10 a.m. my car was still the only one in the parking lot. Important: Make sure you wear high boots or gaiters, otherwise the swamp will end up in your shoes.
You're gonna get bogged down. The walk starts nice enough with an actual footpath, but around the halfway point you have to traverse straight up bogs all the way back to the start. This shouldn't be too big of a problem if there's been a period of relatively dry weather. But this is Scotland. Prolonged patches of angle deep muck are hard to dodge. And there hasn't been maintenance for a while to boot. Meaning all the bridges are either broken down or on the verge of giving in. The views are amazing and if it's not been to wet this would be mostly fine. Except for the broken bridg(es)
