Hiking
Embark on an easy 3.4-mile (5.5 km) hike around Lago del Predil, a loop that typically takes about 1 hour and 36 minutes to complete with an elevation gain of 484 feet (148 metres). This route offers continuous views of the crystal-clear, blue-green glacial lake, surrounded by the majestic Julian Alps and lush pine and beech forests. You will walk on varied terrain, including white pebble banks and forested paths; be aware that some sections in the eastern beech forest can be bumpy, steep, and include parts with metal cables.
This ring tour is suitable for all skill levels and families, making it a popular choice. While enjoyable year-round, be cautious in uncertain weather, as the eastern forested section can become slippery. Some parts of the trail may lack clear signage, so navigation tools are recommended, and crampons are advisable for winter excursions. In summer, you can swim in the lake, though the water remains quite cold.
The trail passes by historically significant sites, including Forte del Lago, an Austro-Hungarian fortification from World War I. Situated in a glacial valley, the lake's pure waters are fed by mountain streams, and its proximity to the Slovenian border and Predil Pass makes it a notable stop. You will also see a characteristic islet in the middle of the lake, which is part of a local legend about a submerged village.

We discovered this lake when we drove to the Soca Valley on our first day of vacation.
We definitely wanted to go back.
Because it was so sunny today, it was the perfect day to walk around it.
We started at a hiker's parking lot, then walked along a dry riverbed.
Then we climbed up the most …
