The Hohenwittlingensteig is certified as a premium trail by the German Hiking Institute and rated 72 points. Unfortunately, I don't understand this rating. The first 2 kilometers consist of wide, very firm paths with little variety. The two off-grid sections are dangerous. Some very narrow paths slope steeply toward the lower slope. Several trees that had fallen across the path had to be laboriously negotiated. In the Wolfsschlucht Gorge, I followed the signs and had to hold on to roots to safely clamber down to the lower path, which would have been easier. What a bummer! I won't be hiking this trail a second time. Only the beautiful spring flowers could lessen my disappointment.
We still felt like a little evening lap after the meal... 6.5 km should be manageable... It was a wonderful, but also quite demanding hike, for which we finally needed almost 3 hours. In the evening sun there was a very nice atmosphere and we were very impressed / pleased with the slotted rocks, the Hohenwittlingen ruins, the Schiller cave and especially the Wolfsschlucht!
Hiked the Wittsteig with the Albverein Allmendingen in humid weather but stayed dry. It was very slippery in places and there were a lot of tree trunks in the way. A hike that I can happily recommend.
The Hohenwittlingensteig is one of the five premium hiking trails Grafensteige, which lead us to the natural beauties in the Swabian Alb biosphere reserve. The tour promises many highlights in a short length and is a small insider tip, even for experienced Bad Urach hikers. We enjoy the fresh Alb air and the tranquility of the Alb plateau. A steep ascent follows from the slotted rock to the Hohenwittlingen castle ruins. There we enjoy a great view over the hilly landscape of the Swabian Alb and the upper Ermstal. The further path leads us to the mysterious Schiller Cave, where Rulaman fans in particular will get their money's worth. Another highlight of the tour is the lush green Wolfsschlucht. In the damp gorge, which is pleasantly cool even in summer, you can marvel at the impressive sinter terraces that were created by mineral deposits. Nice, short, challenging round for four🚶🏼♂️🚶♀️🚶👨🦯. The paths were still a bit frosty. It was good that we had our hiking poles with us for the slippery spots on the way down. First we hiked the Wolfstal. The path leads down a steel staircase and along the rocks, secured with a steel cable. Then it goes past the Rulamannhöhle cave and uphill again to the Hohenwittlingen castle ruins. Then you hike on to the split rock. Here the path goes steeply downhill again. It is slippery and you have to be careful. At the end, wide forest paths lead to the car park in Wittlingen. We really enjoyed this round, also because the sun was shining today.
We were again at the Hohenwittlingensteig 🫶🤩 Distance to the The goal today was to precisely determine vantage points. With the many beautiful butterflies, it took us longer.😄🤩 It was nice.
