Osterwald, Nesselberg, Ith, and Thüster Berg form a charming landscape on this tour. The hilly loop, with some elevation gain and steep climbs, opens up many historical and cultural sights between Brünnighausen in the north and Wallensen and Harderode in the south.
The region between Ith and Hils was settled early on and has been the subject of conflicts between rival noble families since the Middle Ages. You'll encounter these historical relics repeatedly on your tour in the form of impressive castles and palaces.
The region is also characterized by its wealth of natural resources. The place names reflect the importance of mining and salt production in the region. You'll find numerous places to stop for refreshments in the towns and villages.
You start at Coppenbrügge Castle, or alternatively at the train station, and leave the town on country paths. The Ith Trail leads you further north through grain fields and agricultural land. If you like, it's worth taking a short detour from Ockensen to the "Wasserbaum," a man-made natural monument.
The route past the wind farm and glider airfield brings you to the most challenging loop of your tour. On a well-paved road, you conquer the steep climb to Hasselberg. Enjoy the view there and look forward to the descent. A forest path leads you past the old NATO bunker and uphill once more, before the descent with a short climb via Bessingen brings you back to Coppenbrügge.
Due to its topography, the tour places varying demands on fitness and endurance. You have the option of dividing it into individual, smaller tours and tailoring them to your needs.
