Loop of the Royal Forest of Compiègne

Gravel riding

Starting from Compiègne train station (40 minutes from Paris-Nord), this route of nearly 50 kilometers crosses the fifth largest national forest in France on roads with little traffic. First, it reaches the Château de Pierrefonds, to the southeast, via the Compiègne–Saint-Jean-aux-Bois-Pierrefonds cycle path.

The route then takes a few forest paths, rolling paths and secondary roads on a slightly more uneven profile (but without major difficulty). You will pass by the ponds and the former priory of Saint-Pierre, the village of Vieux-Moulin and the Route des Prés.

Finally, after the Beaux-Monts belvedere, the return to Compiègne and its Imperial Palace, opened by Napoleon I for Marie-Louise of Austria, is along the sumptuous Allée des Beaux-Monts. The perspective is astonishing.

To follow this route which offers the most beautiful of the royal forest of Compiègne, we recommend a VTC, a mountain bike or a gravel bike.

Saint-Jean-aux-Bois is a small village. It was almost classified among the "most beautiful villages in France", alas, it was not. A short walk will allow you to discover the fortified gate and its drawbridge, the old abbey and the beautiful rue des Abbesses.

Pierrefonds Castle

Highlight • Castle

Pierrefonds Castle has many stories to tell. It was built towards the end of the 14th century by the Duke of Orléans. Dismantled in the 17th century and left in ruins for years, it was rebuilt on the orders of Napoleon III. The result is a castle with a medieval and defensive appearance.

Beaux Monts Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

An exceptional perspective in the heart of the Compiègne forest. The five-kilometer, 60-meter-wide avenue, which starts from the Imperial Palace, was designed by Napoleon I to remind Empress Marie-Louise of Austria of the Schönbrunn Palace, near Vienna, where she grew up.
