This hike is rated as difficult. While the overall distance is around 7.3 km with about 277 meters of elevation gain, sections can be steep, especially approaching summits like Grand Montrond. Hikers should be prepared for varied terrain and a sustained effort.
Specific parking details for this combined loop are not provided, but generally, trails in the Montrond area often have parking available near ski stations or designated trailheads. For the Balcon du Léman section, access points vary, so it's best to check local information for the specific starting point you choose. Public transport options are limited, making driving the most common way to reach these areas.
Hiking with dogs is generally possible in the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park, but specific regulations may apply, especially concerning nature reserves or protected areas. Always keep your dog on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure their safety on potentially steep or rocky sections. Check for any seasonal restrictions or specific rules before you go.
The best time to hike this loop is typically from late spring to early autumn (roughly June to October). During these months, the weather is generally more stable, and trails are clear of snow. Access to certain routes around Montrond may be limited from December to June due to nature development, so always check seasonal conditions before planning a winter hike.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking on public trails within the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park. However, as a protected area, it's crucial to respect all park regulations, such as staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and carrying out all your waste. Some specific activities or areas might have different rules, so always check local signage.
This loop offers truly spectacular panoramic views. From the Grand Montrond summit, you'll be treated to unforgettable 360-degree vistas encompassing Lake Geneva, the city of Geneva, and the majestic Mont Blanc massif. The Balcon du Léman sections also provide stunning perspectives of Lake Geneva and the surrounding Alps.
This specific loop is a wilderness hike, and there are no cafes or restaurants directly on the trail itself. It's advisable to carry all necessary food and water for the duration of your hike. You may find dining options in nearby villages or towns before or after your adventure.
The primary natural features are the summits of Petit Montrond and Grand Montrond, which offer incredible views. The trail traverses diverse landscapes typical of the Jura mountains, including forest paths and ridge walks. You'll also experience the unique environment of the Haut-Jura Regional Natural Park.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with several other official trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Balcon du Léman trail, Le Colomby de Gex, and the E4 France, frontière - La Vieille Faucille. It also uses segments of local routes like the Route du Petit Mont-Rond and Chemin du Crozat d'Amont.
Given its 'difficult' rating and varied terrain, this specific loop might be challenging for younger children or families not accustomed to strenuous hiking. While some shorter, easier sections exist in the broader Balcon du Léman area, this particular combined route is better suited for experienced hikers or families with older, active children.
The terrain is quite varied. You can expect a mix of forest paths, open ridge walks, and steeper sections, especially as you ascend towards the summits. Some parts may involve rocky terrain. The trails around Grand Montrond often climb parallel to ski slopes and forest roads before becoming steeper near the top.
Quite foggy at the top, but pleasant temperatures. The ☀️ would have grilled us otherwise. Pretty easy tour, the grotto tour a few days later was a lot crisper
A very pleasant hike with superb views from the Petit to Grand Mont-Rond. But it's not Expert level, only intermediate; there were little children happily doing it. But it seems the loop doesn't exist (at least in August) because we had to climb over a sheep fence to reach a passable road within sight... we persisted, we did it, but this return route no longer seems to exist.
