Mountain biking

Embark on the Ben Nevis and the Mamores circuit, a difficult mountain bike ride that takes you through some of Scotland's most dramatic landscapes. This extensive route covers 43.6 miles (70.1 km) with a significant 3888 feet (1185 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 6 hours and 37 minutes to complete. You will encounter varied terrain, from forest singletrack and fast descents to rough, rocky paths and technical sections, all set against the magnificent backdrop of Ben Nevis and the Mamores.

This challenging circuit demands a high level of fitness and advanced riding skills. Be prepared for sections where you will need to push or carry your bike, especially on steep or boulder-strewn paths. Summer, from June to August, is generally the best time to tackle the route due to longer daylight hours and milder weather, but always be ready for rapid changes in conditions, including rain and fog.

The Ben Nevis and the Mamores circuit is considered one of the biggest and best rides in the UK, offering an unparalleled sense of remoteness and immersion in the wild Scottish Highlands. It provides close-up views of iconic landmarks like Ben Nevis, Britain's highest peak, and the majestic Mamores range. The diverse riding experience, from fast trails to technical challenges, makes it a true test of a mountain biker's abilities and endurance.

West Highland Way: Nevis Forest Section

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

Although there has been some substantial felling here in recent years, the Nevis Forest offers some fantastic challenges and epic views as you course your way into Fort William.

Steep singletrack, epically fast doubletrack, steppy thrutchyness; it's all here.

Old Military Road: Kinlochleven to Fort William

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A beautiful stretch of gravelly mountain paths that are great on any kind of offroad-oriented bike like MTB and gravel bikes. The climb is gradually up from Kinlochleven and you'll be rewarded (on not too cloudy days) with a unique view upon Ben Nevis once you're up. A beautiful and also fun ride trough the mountains!

Doubletrack riding through classic Scottish scenery. In good weather the Mammore Munros rise up to the North, and in less clear weather, the Loch and moorland vegetation remains starkly beautiful. Rocky at times, this trail connects Kinlochleven to the remote Southern end of Loch Treig and Abhainn Rath (river).

A pleasant blue graded section of single track, forming part of the Witch's trails in the Nevis Range. This section undulates whilst generally going downhill and is a good introduction to the easier trails in the area.

Trail Reviews

Wayne Perkins
May 7, 2025, MTB ride in the Scottish mountains

This ride ended up being pretty brutal with some of the terrain too rocky and lots of swamp bogs so there was quite a bit of pushing/hike a bike....it was a bit scary in some places as they are so remote especially when you're on your own and no phone signal and praying you don't have a catastrophic mechanical...but the scenery is something else, photos just don't doit justice

Plan a 10-12 km walk after crossing the river, there is no way. Never ride an e-bike. Riding the trails in the bike park at the end of the tour, unfortunately it was already too dark for me.
