Pennington Flash

Highlight • Natural Monument

Pennington Flash lake and the surrounding woodland and paths are a local nature reserve and country park.
A Flash is the term for a lake formed in a depression caused by mining subsidence. It's interesting that the industrial past has created beautiful places like this.

Common Lane Footbridge

Highlight • Cycleway

The Leeds to Liverpool canal is a 127mile stretch of canal between the two cities. It's no longer an industrial route but very well used for leisure. Here a small footbridge gives a crossing point and allows walkers to make circular routes.

Trail Reviews

Doggy Dawdles
June 22, 2024, Potter around Pennington Flash

This circular walk is around 5km and flat. The only negative it that a couple if times you have to leave the park and wander along the road, so dogs on leads, but otherwise its pretty doggy friendly. There a nice cafe in the park too. Parking is around £2.50.

Me and my Dad really enjoyed this walk at Pennington Flash Nature Reserve. It's a birdwatchers dream, so my dad had a lot of bird spotting along the way!

Nature is the best therapy! After a hectic week, I decided to slow down (literally) and take in every step of this trail with the mini. We soaked up the sun, listened to the birds, watched the cows & spent an hour mindfully in nature on this lovely local circular walk. Car park is £2.50 for the day, there's also a cafe and children's play area en route.
