The loop starts and ends in the picturesque village of Dourbies. Parking is generally available within the village, which serves as the main access point for this hike. You can find more logistical information on local tourism sites like tourismegard.com or cevennes-tourisme.fr.
The best time to hike is generally during spring or autumn. It's advisable to avoid this trail during hot weather, especially in summer, due to the initial two kilometers featuring a strong, sun-exposed slope and other exposed sections along the route.
This loop is considered to be of moderate difficulty, requiring good physical condition and sure-footedness. It is recommended for experienced hikers due to its challenging sections and varied terrain. It may not be suitable for beginners or families with young children.
The trail offers diverse terrain, characteristic of the Cévennes. You'll traverse paths composed of rock, pebbles, and earth, moving between granite and schist formations. Sections include a beautiful beech forest, areas where granite has decomposed into coarse sand (arène), and paths along the Dourbies gorges.
Cévennes National Park has specific regulations regarding dogs. Generally, dogs are allowed on trails but must be kept on a leash to protect wildlife and livestock. Always check the latest park regulations before your visit to ensure compliance.
As a general rule, there are no entrance fees or permits required for hiking on public trails within the Cévennes National Park. However, as it is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site, visitors are expected to respect all park regulations, especially concerning waste, fires, and wildlife.
The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views. From the ridges, you can enjoy wide-ranging vistas over the Trévezel and Dourbie valleys. The highest point provides a comprehensive panorama of the entire wooded Lingas massif and the granitic dome of Saint-Guiral. Don't miss the View of the Cévennes, Mount Mal, and the Dourbies gorges.
The estimated hiking time for this 12.1 km (7.5 miles) loop is between 3 hours 50 minutes and 4 hours 15 minutes, depending on your pace and stops for enjoying the views.
Yes, while primarily following 'La crête du Suquet', the route also passes through sections of 'Le défi des trois rivières', 'Tour du Mont Aigoual', and 'Chemin du Mas'.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, essential gear includes sturdy hiking boots for sure-footedness, sufficient water, sun protection (hat, sunscreen) due to exposed sections, and appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather conditions in the mountains. A map or GPS device is also recommended.
Yes, the trail starts and ends in the village of Dourbies. As a picturesque village, it may offer local amenities such as small shops, cafes, or restaurants where you can refuel after your hike. It's always a good idea to check opening hours in advance, especially during off-peak seasons.
Another lovely half day tour near Dourbies in the Cévennes, this time in the mountains above the village. In autumn, the forests are full of porcini mushrooms and other treasures. It is best to take a large basket or bags with you.
Superb hike on the heights of the village of La Dourbie. We leave the village on a nice climb (not steep) in the mountain pastures to reach the forest, then the Col du Suquet. The return to the village passes along the side of the valley with an incredible view of the Dourbie gorges I recommend this hike!
