Hiking

Undoubtedly one of the finest peaks in the Trossachs, Ben Venue makes for an excellent objective. The most popular route is a characterful hike that begins from the shores of Loch Achray. On a clear day, expect stunning views along Loch Katrine into the heart of the Southern Highlands.

It’s fairly common on a mountain hike that your objective hides out of sight during the early stages. This isn’t the case with Ben Venue, which is in glorious full view from the environs of Loch Achray, particularly from the Creag Noran Viewpoint, just a short hop from the car park. You cross a marshy section on boardwalks and then cross the Achray Water via a footbridge.

You follow paths and forestry tracks to steadily gain height, before a well-made trail ascends gradually along the Gleann Riabhach valley, arcing around the mountain to reach its southern breach. The path continues, ascending the head of the corrie into a hanging valley to the southwest of the two summits.

From here, there’s a steep final ascent, as a vista across Loch Katrine and the Southern Highlands opens up. First, you visit Ben Venue’s main summit, with grandstand views of nearby Ben Lomond, as well as conspicuous distant peaks like the Cobbler and Stob Binnein.

A short but rough walk brings you to the East Top, which is a particularly fine viewpoint for Loch Achray and Loch Venachar, flanked by the wooded hillsides of the Trossachs and stretching away to the east.

The return journey is much the same, with an optional variation once back among the trees at loch level.

Creag Noran Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is a superb viewpoint that is easily accessed from the Ben Venue car park at the western end of Loch Achray. Woodland trails take you to this spot, which rewards with spectacular Trossachs views. It can be an objective in itself or added to a longer trek to Ben A'an or Ben Venue.

Achray Water Footbridge

Highlight • Bridge

This footbridge across the fast-flowing Achray Water comes after a lovely boardwalk section. Hikers bound for Ben Venue often pass this way and there are lovely views towards its twin-peaked top from here. The Water of Achray flows down from Loch Katrine into Loch Achray, just to the east of here.

Ben Venue summit

Highlight • Natural Monument

Twin-topped Ben Venue is one of the finest peaks in the Trossachs and makes for an excellent hillwalk. This is the main summit, though it's easy to miss as the main path bypasses it. The view across bonnie Loch Katrine to the wild tangle of the Southern Highlands is magnificent. The Cobbler's oddball form is obvious, while the Crianlarich Hills look impressive, particularly shapely Stob Binnein.

Ben Venue East Top

Highlight • Summit

There are gorgeous views from the top. The main summit is the one with the cairn, not the one that most people naturally seem to be heading towards. The trail up from Ledart Farm is definitely quieter and more scenic. It comes with the added benefit of little waterfalls and rock pools that invite you in for a quick dip.

November 6, 2023, Ben Venue east top from Loch Achray

Fantatic little climb, stunning scenery/landscape particularly at lower levels (would make a fantastic shorter walk for anyone not wanting to do the full climb). Sadly no views from the top today 🌫️🌦️
