Hiking

The motto of De Zoom-Kalmthoutse Heide is 'enjoy without limits' for a reason! We share this diverse natural landscape with heathland, fens, dunes and forests with our southern neighbours. If you want to enjoy the undiscovered Netherlands, a walk through this area on the Dutch-Belgian border is a must.

This is a challenging walk of 17 kilometers for the advanced walker through a varied area. The route starts and ends at the Wilhelmietenstraat bus stop in Huijbergen and is therefore accessible by public transport. This stop is easily accessible from Roosendaal train station, among other things.

After a diverse trip along the Staartse Duinen and beautiful fens, you will arrive at the De Stapper lookout tower after about eight kilometers. This ten meter high tower offers a fantastic view over the nearby Stappersven and the rest of the Kalmthoutse Heide.

A walk along the special pluisven leads you to the Pillars of Mont Noir, the only remains of the former Mont Noir estate. The collection of columns in a shady spot is a nice location for a break or a picnic.

A little further on you will come across a drainage ditch. Not a special highlight in itself, were it not for the fact that this inconspicuous gully actually forms the Dutch-Belgian border. A few kilometers further on you can see the Brabantse Wal: a transition from high-lying sandy soil to low-lying clay. This rampart was created by glacial ice in the ice age.

Staartse Dunes

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

The area consists of sand drifts and dunes and offers a beautiful landscape for walkers. Here are some tips for hikers who want to visit the Staartse Duinen:

Keep the weather in mind: the area can get very busy during good weather, so consider going on a day when it's less crowded.

Respect nature: the area is protected, so hikers should treat nature with care and follow directions.

Bring enough water and food: the area is large and there are few places where you can buy something, so make sure you have enough water and food with you.

Be careful with the sun: the area is mostly exposed, so make sure you have plenty of sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses with you.

Make use of the walking routes: various walking routes have been set out to help you explore the area.

This part of the heathland is not accessible all year round. For a long time this is a breeding ground for various animals. Check in advance whether this hiking trail is accessible. If it's open, sure. You will discover idyllic spots but above all the tranquility. Most walkers stick to the pre-planned walking loops. A discoverer goes further. Recommended.

Pluisven

Highlight • Lake

One of the most special places on this heath: the pluisven.

Here you can hear countless frogs croaking in the summer. Please note: the path along the fen can be very soggy!

The Stapper Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The tower is ten meters high and offers visitors not only a fantastic view of the Stappersven, one of the largest fens in Flanders, but also of the rest of the Kalmthoutse Heide.

Mont Noir Columns

Highlight • Monument

In the 19th century, an industrialist from Brussels named Mignot bought a pavilion after a World Exhibition and had it transferred to his own estate, which he called "Mont Noir".

At the same time he had the heath cultivated and he had a park laid out with avenues, ponds, columns and statues.

Unfortunately, nothing of that park is left now, except for the columns. The image of three columns on the purple signposts is therefore a reference to the estate as it used to be.

Waterproof footwear is especially recommended. Yesterday, a detour of 1.6 km was also necessary, because the path had become a gigantic fen. But it remained a beautiful but difficult walk. Walking in "soft" or loose sand is more tiring than on a hard forest path. Nevertheless, this walk is breathtaking in many ways
