Hiking

Embark on the Richmond Park & the River Thames loop from Richmond, a moderate hike covering 8.4 miles (13.6 km) with 343 feet (105 metres) of elevation gain. This scenic route typically takes around 3 hours and 33 minutes to complete. You will experience varied terrain, from urban streets to broad parkland paths and tranquil riverside trails. Within Richmond Park, look for herds of red and fallow deer roaming freely among ancient trees and meadows. The path along the River Thames offers picturesque views, including the historic Richmond Bridge and lush greenery. You can also enjoy sweeping vistas over the Thames Valley from Pembroke Lodge.

This loop is easily accessible, with its starting point in Richmond well-connected by public transport. While much of the trail is level, some sections within Richmond Park involve gentle climbs, and a good level of fitness is recommended for this moderate hike. Be aware that parts of the Thames Path can become muddy after wet weather, so plan your footwear accordingly.

Richmond Park is London's largest Royal Park and a designated National Nature Reserve, spanning over 2,500 acres. It was established as a deer park in the 17th century, and its wild deer are still a major draw. The trail also passes historically significant buildings like White Lodge and incorporates a section of the Thames Path. The iconic view from Richmond Hill is so significant it is protected by an Act of Parliament, preserving the stunning landscape.

Richmond Park is a wild and rural landscape just a stone’s throw from central London. The largest of the city’s Royal Parks, Richmond was created by Charles I in the 17th century as a deer park and you can observe herds there to this day.

The site has many ancient trees and is home to a number of species of fungi, birds, beetles, bats, grasses and wildflowers. Richmond Park has many buildings of architectural or historic interest, including the Grade I-listed White Lodge, which was formerly a royal residence and is now the Royal Ballet School.

Pen Ponds, Richmond Park

Highlight • Lake

In the centre of Richmond Park sits Pen Ponds; two lakes, the Upper and the Lower Pond. You can walk along the footpath that separates them. On the lakes are three islands which provide roosting and nesting spots for birds. Keep an eye out for a heron keeping a silent watchful eye on proceedings.
There is a coffee van a short walk south east from here at the Pen Ponds Car Park.

Ham House and Gardens

Highlight • Castle

In the care of the National Trust, Ham House is a 17th century manor house in an enviable position, right on the banks of the River Thames. Buccleuch Gardens

Highlight • Natural

These public gardens, along with the Terrace Gardens, were once part of the grounds of three riverside mansions: Buccleuch House, Lansdowne House and Cardigan House, formerly the homes of the Duke of Buccleuch, the Marquess of Lansdowne and the Earl of Cardigan.

The first two were acquired by the Richmond Vestry in 1886 for £30,000 and the grounds were then landscaped by Sir Frederick, later Lord, Leighton and opened to the public the following year. Part of the gardens of Cardigan House was added in 1962.

Buccleuch House, on the riverside, was originally called Montagu Villa, having been built for George, Duke of Montagu; it passed on his death to his son-in-law the Duke of Buccleuch. The large Georgian house was demolished in 1938 - as were several others - with the widening of the Petersham Road. The riverside gardens were added to the public open space and this lawn is a popular spot for both local people and visitors.

Richmond Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

This is the oldest bridge over the Thames in London, never having been replaced. It was completed in 1777 at a cost of £26,000 to replace a horse ferry. Over the centuries it has been drawn, painted and photographed many times. The toll booths at each end of the bridge remained until the end of the 1800s. The bridge was widened in 1937 when the original facing stone was retained.
